MA Counselling and Psychotherapy


Course Description

The programme is designed to provide education and training in an integrative approach to counselling and psychotherapy to a level appropriate for safe, ethical and effective practice. It provides a foundation for you to develop as a counsellors/psychotherapists through:

intensive training in practical skills
a core model within which it is possible to integrate concepts and techniques from a variety of orientations.
You are encouraged to develop your own integrative ways of thinking and working, based on critical appraisal of a range of theoretical perspectives – and what works for you with their clients – rather than adherence to a particular theoretical school. The course is designed to appeal to a diverse range of occupational groups within the ‘helping professions’. It is also appropriate for those who wish to work in private practice.

Years 1 and 2 (the postgraduate diploma) include all the elements required by BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) accreditation, providing a balance of theory, skills training, personal development and clinical practice.

Year 3 (MA year) is based on an independent research project or dissertation.

UEL Postgraduate Scholarship - 20+ Awards

The UEL Postgraduate Scholarship is a 50% fee waiver on tuition fees. Scholarship is awarded based on an application process, open to applicants who meet the criteria below:Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL starting in September 2016
• Studying full-time or part-time
• Fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture
• Integrated Masters, Professional Doctorates, MPhil, PhD

50 per cent discount on tuition fees

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must have applied for a postgraduate taught course, starting in September 2016, and be studying at one of our campuses.

An application form is available on our website and students who meet the criteria above will automatically be invited to apply for our scholarship scheme. Decisions will be based on the quality of the student’s application. Applications will be assessed internally by relevant member of staff.

Part-time fee waiver - 20+ Awards

Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL that starts in September 2016
• Be a part-time postgraduate student (in attendance) studying at least 50% of a full time course
• Be fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Be classified as ‘home’ for tuition fee purposes and meet standard residency requirements
• Be studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying:
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture
• Integrated Masters, Professional Doctorates, MPhil, PhD In addition, MA Social Work students are also not eligible to apply if they are in receipt of government funding.

Eligibility

You must be on a low income (up to £18,200 or £26,000 with a partner) and receiving one of four qualifying benefits. These are: Job Seekers’ Allowance (income based), Income Support, Housing Benefit and New Deal Allowance.

Alumni Scholarship - 20+ Awards

You should previously have been awarded an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, professional doctorate or a postgraduate research degree from UEL or one of its predecessor institutions, such as the Polytechnic of East London.
You cannot apply for the alumni discount if your course involves distance learning or if you are studying towards a master’s and diploma in Architecture (RIBA Part 2), a PGCE, a post-compulsory education and training (PCET) course or any short course or courses worth less than 120 credits.

15 per cent discount on tuitions fees

Eligibility

If you’re a member of UEL’s Alumni Association, you are automatically eligible for 15 per cent off your postgraduate fees*. The offer applies to all UEL alumni, however long ago they graduated.

Application Procedure

Please include on your application form that you previously studied at UEL, and include your old student ID number. The 15 per cent discount will be deducted from your tuition fees after any other scholarships, and before any early payment discount is applied. It can also be used alongside other scholarships and funding.

International Scholarships - 20+ Awards

An international scholarship at UEL covers part of the cost of course fees. Scholarships are highly sought after and the process of applying for scholarships is often competitive and carries deadline dates. The amount awarded is assessed on a case by case basis and is often up to £4000 off tuition fees per year.
