MRes International Public Policy and Public Management

Course Description

Study

This innovative MRes combines the study of how policy is made at both national and international levels. Students consider the impact of international organisations on national governments and develop an advanced understanding of the main theories applied in the study of public policy and public management. Political science is at the core of this course, but students can usually choose modules from other disciplines, including business and management, environmental sciences, international development and law.

Structure

Students have seminars and lectures for the initial semesters, and then commence working on their dissertation. The dissertation is a very important part of this MRes: students choose their topic and are allocated an individual supervisor to give advice on every aspect of its creation. Assessment is based on this dissertation, plus essays, research papers, performance in seminars, tests and formal examinations.

Teaching

UEA’s School of Political, Social and International Studies pride themselves on providing top-quality, research-inspired teaching. Lecturers will share cutting edge information on your subject of study and provide a stimulating environment to learn. Most years, a trip to Brussels is organised for Master's students, visiting the EU and NATO, with opportunities to ask officials and military people questions on their work. It is also a chance to meet graduates from UEA who are now working in the area.

Employability

Over the course of the MRes, students develop a variety of transferable skills including debating, oral presentations, team work, project work and essay writing. All students also take a module that is specifically designed to help improve research skills, ideal for those seeking a career in research. Graduates have taken up jobs in the fields of business, teaching, policy research, government, pressure groups and international organisations.
