Course Description

Study

This course provides a theoretical and empirical understanding of international security and international relations. The International Security Masters (ISMA) will help you to develop a range of valuable skills, particularly if you are seeking a professional career in international security as a Policy Analyst, Journalist or Researcher, or to pursue postgraduate research in international security and international relations.

Structure

Central to all UEA’s international politics MA degrees is an essential grounding in International Relations theory and security in the international system, including exploration of the practical issues of security, such as terrorism. A core component is the dissertation, where students are required to write on an agreed topic with a specialist supervisor and conduct independent research. Assessment is a mixture of coursework and exams alongside course tests and reflective reports.

Teaching

UEA’s School of Political, Social and International Studies pride themselves on providing top-quality, research-inspired teaching with an interdisciplinary approach. The majority of teaching utilises lectures and seminars, but where appropriate films and scenarios are used to explore different concepts, both thematically and empirically. All modules will seek to improve your engagement and encourage independent learning.

Employability

Over the course of the MA, students develop a variety of transferable skills including debating, oral presentations, team work, project work and essay writing. All students also take a module that is specifically designed to help improve research skills, ideal for those seeking a career in research. Graduates have taken up jobs in the fields of business, teaching, policy research, government and international organisations.
