Transcultural European Outdoor Studies MA

Course Description

Please note: This course is delivered in partnership with Philipps University at Marburg, Germany and The Norwegian School of Sport Science, Oslo. Find more information and apply by visiting their website: http://www.erasmusmundus-teos.eu/

Have a degree in outdoor studies? Do you want to expand your career options through taking up work in Europe? Then we're here to help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to work across transcultural settings. You'll travel and live through the landscapes and cultures of northern Europe by studying with three leading universities, each considered experts in outdoor studies.

This course focuses on transculturality in the context of social and environmental issues and the part outdoor education can play. By studying for a semester in England, Germany and Norway, you'll gain a fully rounded experience taught through experiential courses. Each university has excellent resources and world-renowned academic staff to help your learning, and your degree will open employment opportunities across the world. If you're looking for first class learning at prestigious facilities across Europe, this is the right course for you.

Course outline

Outdoor practice has gained tremendous significance in all industrial countries in recent years, opening up new opportunities for professionals in this field. You will study the accumulated knowledge of the three central traditions of the philosophy of outdoor pedagogics - the Norwegian Friluftsliv, the English Outdoor Education and the German Erlebnispädagogik. This will help develop a transcultural sensitivity, discerning the cultural transitions and open borders between the three national concepts.

Reading about other cultures is one thing, but nothing quite compares to fully immersing yourself into a new way of life. This programme has been designed as a "peregrinatio academica", in which a study group remains together throughout the whole course of studies and spends a semester each at one of the three universities in England, Norway and Germany. The dissertation can take place at any of the partner universities, and there are also opportunities to study for a dissertation at a growing number of partner universities in Australia, Canada or the USA.

Graduate destinations

Graduates from this course can enter a wide range of professions, including teaching, higher education lecturing, research, guiding, voluntary and public sector administration, social work, therapeutic work, outdoor education and international corporate roles.
