MSc Leadership in Policing

Course Description

This course responds to the national move toward enhanced professionalisation of the policing family. It has been developed by a policing, leadership and development team from the University and has involved sector experts to add further rigour to the development process.

The knowledge, skills and abilities developed through this programme are targeted at enhancing an individual’s employment prospects within the policing family.

The Compulsory Modules for this Course are:

HR4023: Leadership: Personal development in an organisational context:
The module aims to enhance your ability to use and critically evaluate a range of skills and approaches to leadership and self-development within the context of leadership theory and the organisational environment. This module is designed to enable you to critically appraise your own personal and professional development needs; engage in formulation of an appropriate personal development plan; and enhance your leadership potential through a set of experiential development exercises.

HR4029: Strategic Leadership Perspectives in an Organisational Context:
This module will target your ability to apply knowledge and understanding of organisational strategy in order to plan and conduct a team-based investigation. Development will be based on a live issue or problem within a host organisation, which will enable you to enhance your intervention, analytical and project management skills.

FZ4704: The Ethics of Criminal Investigation and Policing:
The main focus of this module is to examine elements of police integrity, accountability and ethical conduct in relation to ‘criminal investigations’. You will also include a wider examination of these elements in relation to policing as a service to the public, as well as identifying relevant legislation. There will also be opportunity to look at the work organisations to which the police are accountable, for example the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

FZ4701: Research Methods:
This module is designed to facilitate your understanding as to the nature of scientific methods and basic techniques in social science research as applied to the collection, analysis, and interpretation of social and management data. Your project will develop as the module progresses, using relevant information from the module to justify the methodology of a case study.

HR4043/FZ4707: Dissertation:
Through this module you will develop your ability to understand and define clearly a problem to be solved; extract relevant material from a literature survey; design and undertake an original investigation and to present, analyse and interpret results. You will learn how to present a coherent, critical account of the work, how it relates to that of others; develop management skills and to achieve a measure of independent inquiry.
