PG Dip Community Specialist Practitioner


Course Description

This course prepares registered nurses to meet the NMC professional standards for specialist education and practice. The course aims to promote the evolution of an adaptable, reflexive and responsive practitioner who promotes the highest standards of client health care. The course incorporates the key principles of specialist practice within the domains of clinical practice; care and programme management; clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership. The course comprises of 50% theory and 50% practice. Assessment methods vary and include: examinations, essays, presentations, business report, viva and practice assessment.

The course is available full-time over 40 weeks or it can be accessed as a part-time course over two, three or four years. The course will be delivered at the main university campus site in Preston, but fifty percent of learning will take place within a practice placement.

The course incorporates the key principles of specialist practice and is grouped into four domains:

Clinical Practice
Care and Programme Management
Clinical Practice Development
Clinical Practice Leadership

This course meets the following core Knowledge Skills Framework (KSF) dimensions:

Health Safety and Security
Service Improvement

Equality and Diversity

In addition individual pathways will meet a number of elements within the following specific dimensions, for example:

Information and Knowledge
General

Students will undertake the equivalent of 6 standard modules, totalling 120 credits, of which 100 credits must be at level 7, with the remaining 20 credits at either level 6 or level .

All students on the programme will undertake the following modules:

Community and Social Policy Practice (10 credits)
Concepts of Public Health (10 credits)
Introduction to Postgraduate Research (20 credits)
Leadership in Practice (20 credits)
Perspectives of Community Specialist Practice (20 credits)
This equates with 80 credits for all pathways except Community Nursing in the Home students who will also undertake an additional compulsory 10 credits through completing V100 Community Practitioner Prescribing. A further 40 credits of option modules (minimum of 30 credits for Community Nursing in the Home students) is required to complete the award

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements include the following:An effective appropriate 1st level registration on the NMC professional in respect of the route they wish to takeThe equivalent of at least one year's post-registration practice experience. Experience of practising within a healthcare environment for a minimum of 18 hours per week (or equivalent part-time) clinical activity. Hold the equivalent of 360 credits of which 120 must be at level 6 (degree level) in a relevant Nursing Practice or Social Sciences related subject. The ability to be self-funding or have the commitment of your employer to support your course fees.
