MSc Building Services

Course Description

MSc Building Services is designed for engineering graduates aiming to attain Engineering Council membership as professional engineers. The UK model of a BEng (Hons) followed by this MSc has full exempting accreditation from all the academic requirements of the UK Engineering Council for CEng status. The specific accrediting institutions are the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute (EI).

The major aim of the course leading to the award is to provide an education for engineering graduates who will then be capable of accepting extensive management responsibility and able to undertake independent critical thought, enhancing and extending their intellectual development whilst becoming conversant with the nature of the industry, thereby developing the ability to arrive at optimal solutions to complex engineering, technological, organisational and managerial problems.

MSc Building Services offers a compulsory element, which runs through the three target awards which seeks to develop advanced design skills and the development of advanced expertise with respect to fires in buildings. The design module focuses upon the application of engineering design in a project scenario, incorporating project management skills. The analysis of leadership and team-based skills presents a challenging and exciting element to the programme. Optional themes can be selected by candidates to enable a wide range of additional skills and capabilities, these are in: Technology, Engineering, Quality, Safety, Risk, Environment, and Law. The final phase of the programme at Masters level offers skills in the development of research skills and an individual investigation in an applied subject within the dissertation module.
