MSc Urban Environmental Management

Course Description

The underlying ethos is that urban and environmental management requires both scientific and managerial expertise to integrate spatial and other forms of official intervention, particularly those related to urban & regional planning and to policy & management for environmental protection. As organisations develop corporate responsibility policies they are looking to employ urban environmental managers. The course provides a critical approach to theories, techniques and methods in urban planning and regeneration within the context of the environment. It provides students with a learning environment in which they will develop their capacity for independent study, their ability to collaborate with others in team settings. The broad areas covered include: a comprehensive introduction to urban environmental management, with particular reference to project planning and strategic planning and the involvement of people in such decisions. The course explores the role of practices and tools to inform and develop.

Several modules (Environmental Management within Organisations, Waste resource and Solutions, Practical Aspect of Waste Management and the Dissertation) are currently accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. It is expected that accreditation will also be sought from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Town Planning Trust.
