MSc Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy


Course Description

This course is approved by CIBSE and the Energy Institute and accredited by the IMechE.

COURSE AIMS
The aim of this programme is firstly to respond to the worldwide demand for building services engineers and managers who have a sound knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to apply this knowledge to the complex situations prevailing within the building services industry.

In addition, in recent years it has become increasingly recognised that the design and operation of buildings need to take greater account of energy consumption. For example, the Government’s white paper “Our Energy Future - Creating A Low Carbon Economy” states, “Policies to raise the energy efficiency of products and buildings will have an important role.” One of the explicit strategies identified in the paper is the achievement of higher standards within new and existing buildings. Finally, by 2006 the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings must be implemented; this will require a declaration of the energy performance and increased attention to the continued improvement in performance.

Consequently, there is a growing need for building services engineering professionals with understanding of the means to reduce the reliance on non-sustainable energy. This MSc programme aims to fulfil both challenges faced by building services engineers.

104.jpg Having completed an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at another UK university, I enrolled onto the MSc course in Building Services Engineering (BSE) at Brunel in September 2011. After an exciting and challenging year here, I successfully completed my MSc degree.

The school of Engineering and Designhas an excellence reputation in providing a comprehensive suite of programmes to suit the needs of the industry and professions, in the areas of building engineering, natural environment and sustainability.

As soon as I joined the MSc course, it was apparent that I had entered a dynamic and vibrant environment, with academics spanning all levels, from research students to research lecturers, readers and professors. The opportunities to enrich my engineering knowledge and professional development were in front of me and I took the opportunity as soon as possible.

The MSc course was challenging; even with its ups and downs on a daily basis, it was exciting to be part of a programme where drawbacks became my motivation to continue and complete the course. Without the guidance of my lecturers, professors, lab staff and interesting conversations with fellow students, I would not have progressed so well.

My dissertation topic was an investigation into the performance of a two-phase closed thermosyphon. I started the literature review and set up a test rig in mid-May and completed the project at the end of August; these were the best four months of my academic life. A daily discussion with my supervisor and the laboratory staff gave me a great opportunity to learn and understand thermodynamic principles and gain experience in real situations.

When I finished the dissertation my supervisor granted me the great opportunity to continue my studies with a PhD. It is an honour to be part of the Mechanical Engineering Department and I accepted the offer without hesitation.

I am confident that the long established history and partnership with industry in the UK and overseas would support my research during the upcoming years. Given that the University has one of the world’s leading groups in the area of building services, and offers a world-class research environment, I am confident that I will concentrate fully on my research.

Brunel University is my past and my future and I’m happy to be a part of it. I would highly recommend postgraduate studies in Building Services Engineering at Brunel to any prospective student.

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarships
The scholarship is available for PGT courses at Brunel starting from September 2014 and focuses on two key audiences, namely high calibre prospective PG students and our alumni who wish to undertake further postgraduate study at Brunel. It is available to both Home/ EU and International students.In order to attract high calibre students and encourage them to undertake postgraduate study we intend to offer this scholarship as a discount of 15% off the tuition fees for anyone who has obtained a first class undergraduate degree from a UK University, either in the UK or abroad.Additionally Brunel has always offered a reduction in PG tuition fees for Brunel alumni and Brunel students who take up postgraduate education could receive the '15% graduate discount'.These two discounts are not exclusive and therefore a Brunel alumnus who has a first class undergraduate degree can receive both.There are exclusions to this offer. Women in Engineering Scholarships - 20+ Awards

The Women in Engineering Programme supports female graduates to attain their full potential in the engineering profession. The Programme consists of a bespoke mentoring scheme (all mentors are professionals), personal professional development training and visits to industry. The Programme also includes a £10,000 Women in Engineering Award for 30 selected female students starting their full-time masters studies in September 2015 on a range of MSc courses.This Programme aims to help you promote yourself as an engineer, have a better understanding of the career paths and opportunities available to you, and develop a network of key contacts to help you rise to the top of your profession.

Eligibility

You must be a female UK/EU student applying for one of the relevant MSc full-time courses listed on our website: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/cedps/courses/women-in-engineering.
You must be studying for your undergraduate degree in the UK, having paid the £9,000 per annum undergraduate tuition fee, and will graduate in 2014/15.
You must have an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Technology, Science or Mathematics, and be eligible for associate or graduate membership of one of the UK Engineering Institutions.
Additional conditions may apply to students from Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland who may be receiving additional funding. Please contact the university for further details.

Application Procedure

There is no separate application procedure for this scholarship. How well you fit the criteria will be based on information taken from your postgraduate application form (application is online via the Brunel website). You should ensure that you submit a strong personal statement that answers the key points above. A good reference from your employer or supervisor will also be an important factor.Applications to the Women in Engineering programme will also be considered from graduate engineers who do not qualify for the current Women in Engineering scholarship.Places on the programme may be offered conditional to receipt of impending qualifications, if it is evident that other criteria have been met. The deadline for application is 1 September 2015.

A UK first or second class honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification, usually in engineering or other appropriate science and technology subject areas. For an alternative route of entry please see the Building Services Engineering Foundation Course. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.
