COURSE AIMS: The evolution of wireless communication systems and networks in recent years has been explosive. This is a global phenomenon, which presently is outstripping the ability of commercial organisations to recruit personnel equipped with the necessary blend of technical and managerial skills who can initiate and manage the introduction of the new emerging technologies in networks and wireless systems. The effect of this current trend has been a growing overlap of the network and communication industries, from component fabrication to system integration. Another result is the development of integrated systems that transmit and process all types of data and information.
The course aims to develop a strong theoretical background involving the future of wireless communication systems. It will also develop a detailed technical knowledge of current practice in wireless systems and networks. It is a distinctive course that is not taught anywhere else in the UK. You will benefit from both a theoretical and practical grounding in the course due to the availability of a fully working wireless laboratory in the School, allowing students to develop their skills in this field. The lab was established as a direct result of research in this field.
The flourishing market place for mobile networks has meant that the telecommunication companies (Vodafone, O2, etc) are making their largest profits from this sector of industry. Therefore demand for jobs and for trained engineers to fill those jobs remains very high.
The connectionless office is also a new trend for creating flexible working areas within companies and organisations and the demand for wireless engineers in this domain is expected to be very high in the future. The continuing trend of convergence of services and networks mean that a lot of new industries and research institutions are looking into integrating satellite, mobile and GPS networks.

My bachelor’s degree was in Electronics Engineering and my BSc dissertation was on smart antenna systems, I received first prize for this. This encouraged an interest in wireless communications, and I decided to do my Masters in this field. The best thing I have found studying at Brunel is that the course content for Wireless Communication Systems MSc was not only attractive, and up to date, but also had a blend of future technologies like (4G) LTE and Wimax systems.
The Placement and Careers Centre assisted me in finding a job; with their help I was successful in securing a job at my first interview just 15 days after submitting my dissertation.
My final year project was hardware based, and was on a Smart Home Automation system. The main idea behind this project was to design a system that should be energy efficient, and also smart enough to control home appliances and gadgets. The whole system was wireless, as I used the ZigBee technology which is IEEE 802.15.4 standard. I built some motion sensors, temperature sensors, light control systems, CO2 detector and a central unit (remote control) or smart control that was responsible for controlling and communicating with the appliances and gadgets wirelessly. The whole system operates on batteries. Choosing a hardware based project was challenging for me, but because of the support from my supervisor I was able to complete my project on time, and also won the IEEE best project of the year prize! My job title is Hardware Manager, and I am responsible for designing and building the product from scratch right up to its final shape. It is a mixture of electronics and electrical as we make smart electric meters and also wireless communication, as these meters talk to each other wirelessly using the same technology that I have used in my final year project i.e. IEEE 802.15.4 standard also known as ZigBee.
I have learned skills and techniques that now I am using it in my practical field. The most important thing in technology that I have learned during the course, and used in my dissertation is ZigBee, and now I am using it in industry which is helping me a lot in solving problems and moving forward.
To conclude, I would highly recommend Brunel University to the people who want to develop their career.

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarships The scholarship is available for PGT courses at Brunel starting from September 2014 and focuses on two key audiences, namely high calibre prospective PG students and our alumni who wish to undertake further postgraduate study at Brunel. It is available to both Home/ EU and International students.In order to attract high calibre students and encourage them to undertake postgraduate study we intend to offer this scholarship as a discount of 15% off the tuition fees for anyone who has obtained a first class undergraduate degree from a UK University, either in the UK or abroad.Additionally Brunel has always offered a reduction in PG tuition fees for Brunel alumni and Brunel students who take up postgraduate education could receive the '15% graduate discount'.These two discounts are not exclusive and therefore a Brunel alumnus who has a first class undergraduate degree can receive both.There are exclusions to this offer. The Women in Engineering Programme supports female graduates to attain their full potential in the engineering profession. You must be a female UK/EU student applying for one of the relevant MSc full-time courses listed on our website: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/cedps/courses/women-in-engineering. You must be studying for your undergraduate degree in the UK, having paid the £9,000 per annum undergraduate tuition fee, and will graduate in 2014/15. You must have an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Technology, Science or Mathematics, and be eligible for associate or graduate membership of one of the UK Engineering Institutions. Additional conditions may apply to students from Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland who may be receiving additional funding. Please contact the university for further details.
There is no separate application procedure for this scholarship. How well you fit the criteria will be based on information taken from your postgraduate application form (application is online via the Brunel website). You should ensure that you submit a strong personal statement that answers the key points above. A good reference from your employer or supervisor will also be an important factor.
Applications to the Women in Engineering programme will also be considered from graduate engineers who do not qualify for the current Women in Engineering scholarship.
Places on the programme may be offered conditional to receipt of impending qualifications, if it is evident that other criteria have been met. The deadline for application is 1 September 2015.
