MSc Advanced Manufacturing Systems

Course Description

This MSc programme is accredited by the IMechE and the IET.

This course is designed to address the challenges of modern Manufacturing and Enterprise Systems. It covers a breadth of subjects that enable candidates to appreciate and deal with complexities of modern Industrial Environments. The AMS graduates will be equipped with the latest techniques in manufacturing and systems engineering for dealing with complexities in:

Efficient and economical performance of Industrial systems ranging from manufacturing, finance, transport, health, and public services;
Managing and providing solutions for advanced automated and semi-automated industries;
Application of advanced computer and mathematical modelling for improved performance, design and management of industrial systems;
The latest advanced material technology and micro/nano manufacturing to achieve highest manufacturing capabilities;
Management and implementation of Projects and Operations under time and resource constraints.

The Advanced Manufacturing Systems programme consists of three main schemes, Technology, Systems and Management.

The technology scheme: enables you to appreciate the technological challenges of modern industrial systems. The scheme provides you with the necessary skills to tackle issues in manufacturing methods, design, applied control, and precision manufacturing.

The systems scheme: deals with modern mathematical tools for measuring systems performance techniques such as, discrete event simulation, modelling, stochastic analysis, queuing theory, quality and reliability issues.

The management scheme: enables you to appreciate the necessary management skills to run and effectively manage projects, companies and large consortiums. You will acquire the necessary skills to design and manage supply chains.

In addition to a strong theoretical background, AMS will offer you the opportunity to acquire practical skills in the subject area with its state-of-the-art workshops and computer labs.

AMS is run by one of the strongest research groups in the University and within the UK. In the current Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of academics in the School achieved international standard, with 100% achieving this level in General Engineering. General Engineering at Brunel is ranked 5th in the country and Mechanical Engineering is ranked 8th in the country by Research Power.

94.jpg I studied Advance Manufacturing Systems MSc.

The thing that attracted me the most to Brunel was the wonderful mix of subjects on the Advance Manufacturing Systems course. After eight years of working in the industry as a manufacturing engineer, the courses appealed to me, and seemed to have the highest potential to enrich my professional career.

With a full heart, I would say that my study experience was simply excellent. Each one of the eight modules was delivered by top professionals and experienced teachers. This made every lesson both interesting and challenging and I hardly missed a class. On top of the modules I had a remarkable experience when working on the dissertation. My supervisor, who is a true professional in his field, was extraordinary both as a tutor and as a professional guide, and I learned greatly from him.

My dissertation project highly contributed to my engineering experience and equipped me with some very powerful tools. The dissertation thesis was “Developing Algorithms for Automatic Dimensioning and Tolerancing of Mechanical Parts”. The goal of the project was to find an automatic algorithm that defines manufacturing dimensions and tolerances to parts (i.e. cylinder, block, etc) in the most sustainable and cost effective way. I chose this subject because being a mechanical engineer I had to design and develop parts, then to assign dimensions that can be used later for production. My dissertation research had helped me to explore ways for finding more effective ways to assign these dimensions, so that a design will be more economical and costly. In addition, my other goal was to turn this logic into automated system that will save precious engineering developing time.

I am currently working as a Product Engineer at and international leading company, Objet Geometrics LTD. I get to practice and bring into use many of the theoretical things I learned at Brunel, and this gives me a great feeling of satisfaction. I also feel that the MSc in Advance Manufacturing Systems was a significant contributor to being accepted to Objet.

Finally, I can whole heartedly recommend applicants to come and study at Brunel. It has a wonderful administration team with a good customer service approach, excellent student facilities including a Computer Centre, labs etc. Most importantly, I felt that the teaching staff were highly professional, trained and experienced. All of this creates a wonderful environment for studying and learning, and it certainly was the case for me.

PG Academic Excellence Scholarships - No. of awards TBC

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarships
The scholarship is available for PGT courses at Brunel starting from September 2014 and focuses on two key audiences, namely high calibre prospective PG students and our alumni who wish to undertake further postgraduate study at Brunel. It is available to both Home/ EU and International students.In order to attract high calibre students and encourage them to undertake postgraduate study we intend to offer this scholarship as a discount of 15% off the tuition fees for anyone who has obtained a first class undergraduate degree from a UK University, either in the UK or abroad.Additionally Brunel has always offered a reduction in PG tuition fees for Brunel alumni and Brunel students who take up postgraduate education could receive the '15% graduate discount'.These two discounts are not exclusive and therefore a Brunel alumnus who has a first class undergraduate degree can receive both.There are exclusions to this offer. Please read the terms and conditions carefully to determine whether you are eligible.
