The programme provides a firm theoretical and practical foundation to infection control practice. This includes strategies for infection control isolation precautions; healthcare workers and related issues; organisation, roles, responsibilities and resource implications of effective infection control; developing management and communication skills; information technology and infection control.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits) and an independent research project (60 credits).
A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, four core modules and four optional modules, flexible study 2-5 years).

Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention, Control and Organisational Aspects
Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship
Decontamination Aspects (including Sterilisation, Disinfection, Cleaning and Engineering)
Legal and Regulatory Aspects
Laboratory Introduction to Basic Bacteriology
Surveillance & Epidemiology: Systems, Data Analysis & Statistics
And other appropriate modules from UCL's distance learning programmes, as agreed with Programme Director.
All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 10,000 words.
Teaching and Learning
The programme is taught through week-long courses and the Internet. Though the majority of the programme is delivered via distance learning, support is offered through a supervisory structure of local and UCL-based tutors. Practical modules cover elements across the spectrum of the syllabus and offer the opportunity to meet other students and teachers on the programme.

The programme is administered by the Division of Infection & Immunity, and we have collaborative research links within UCL and with institutions throughout the world. Teaching is provided by members of the Research Department of Infection (clinical & academic), Public Health England, Eastman Dental Institute, Hospital Infection Society and Health Protection Agency, together with invited guest speakers and external supervisors.
This interactive programme is taught using UCL's virtual learning environment, which provides structured video teaching, an informal virtual discussion forum, a private email link to your personal tutor, a virtual library with links to UCL's wide range of online journals and databases, and detailed personal feedback.

Applicants must hold a minimum of a second-class UK Bachelor's degree in biomedical or life sciences or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. In addition, applicants must have an active professional involvement in the control of hospital infections. It is a prerequisite of the programme that all students have regular access to a personal computer and the Internet and have acquired basic skills in their use.
