MEngSc Food Engineering

Course Description

[[Who is the MEngSc Food Engineering for?]]
The programme will be of particular interest to graduates in Engineering, Science and related disciplines who are interested in food and bioprocess engineering, risk assessment, process development, process control, advanced manufacturing systems and associated environmental issues.

[[What will I learn?]]
You will develop new technical competencies in food and bioprocess engineering, learn how to develop and execute a research plan and acquire skills in the application of leading edge technologies to the agri-food and biotechnology industries, including novel food processing technology, food process automation, risk assessment, computer vision for food quality and food safety.

[[How will I benefit?]]
Excellent job prospects are available to graduates in the food, bioprocess, manufacturing and related agencies and industries.

[[What is the programme about?]]
The Master of Engineering Science in Food Engineering provides a comprehensive coverage of bioprocess and food manufacturing systems engineering.

[[Teaching methods:]]
Students attain a multitude of experiences facilitated through lectures, tutorials, hands on laboratory practicals and individual/team projects.

[[Class profile:]]
Participants usually have an honours primary degree in Engineering or a in a relevant subject area (e.g. Food Science, Food Technology). Students, whose primary degree is not in Engineering but have relevant industry experience, also take this course in order to update their skills and attain an additional qualification.
There is usually a significant cohort of international students in the programme, highlighting the international appeal of the Masters.

[[Class size:]]
Class size ranges from year to year. One to one tuition from an assigned mentor is arranged for every student.

[[Support Services:]]
There is a dedicated graduate studies administrator who will provide administrative support for students. There is also a mentoring system in place where each student is assigned a mentor who will assist students, particularly in relation to research projects and assignments.
Students also avail of the wide range of UCD student support services.

Excellent job prospects are available to graduates in the food, bioprocess, manufacturing and related agencies and industries.
Graduates have progressed to career opportunities in a broad range of internationally recognised companies including Glanbia, Kepac, Coco Cola, Guinness, Kerry group, APV, MC O'Sullivan, ALcontrol Laboratories.

The Masters in Food Engineering ‘has greatly enhanced my career development in the area of Bioprocessing of products and also ensuring quality compliance, which is a regulation which has to be maintained for any Food or drug company to be accredited and to meet EU guidelines and recommendations. Moreover, I have come to understand in this Industry that quality compliance standards work hand in hand with statistical quality control modelling and analysis.

Entry Requirements

*Applicants must hold an honours standard in a relevant Engineering, Science or Technology degree from a recognised higher education institution. *Applicants who do not hold a relevant primary degree but have significant prior work experience will be considered by the Programme Co-ordinator on a case by case basis. *If English is not your native language (unless you have done your primary degree through English), an English language qualification is required, e.g. IELTS International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An average score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version is required.
