MEngSc Materials Science and Engineering

Course Description

[[Who is the Programme Name for?]]
The MEngSc (Materials Science and Engineering) is designed for graduates who have already completed an honours degree in engineering or cognate physical science discipline of at least 3 years duration. It is aimed at those who require a specialist qualification in Materials Science and Engineering or who would like to translate fundamental knowledge in another discipline into an understanding of solid engineered materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers and composites.

[[What will I learn?]]
You will gain advanced theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge in the application of Materials Science and Engineering. Emphasis is placed on the skills required to generate new knowledge through research. This is achieved through independent and project based learning while working with UCD academics and researchers on contemporary research projects. The core of the curriculum will be based on the fundamental science of the materials that enable our technological world including:
* Metals
* Ceramics
* Polymers
* Composites
* Semiconductor materials

In each case, the underlying science, processing and properties will be examined and advanced applications of materials will be explored in areas including (but not limited to):
* Biomedical engineering (biomaterials)
* Nanoscience (nano materials)
* Renewable energy solutions (energy materials)

[[How will I benefit?]]
Materials Scientists and Engineers are at the centre of virtually every area of technology from optoelectronics to space materials and from automotive and aeromotive manufacturing to biomedical devices. Graduates from this programme will have a specialist qualification in engineered materials, capable of working anywhere in the world at an advanced technical level or as an engineering manager.
Graduates will also have specialist training in underlying scientific fundamentals and practical materials handling and analysis techniques that will make them attractive to either potential employers or equip them for further study at advanced postgraduate level such as PhD studies in Ireland or across the world.

[[What is the programme about?]]
The aim of the ME Materials Science and Engineering is to provide advanced engineering education in subject areas related to design and application of materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers and composites in a range of industries such as biomedical devices, energy engineering, chemical and biochemical plant manufacture, bulk material manufacture etc: it must be borne in mind that every engineering system is made of something and that ‘something’ is a material which must be optimised and engineered for its specific application. In many cases, the available materials are the current limiters to technological development of new, more effective and efficient products.
