Taught MSc Evolutionary Biology

Course Description

[[Who is the UCD MSc in Evolutionary Biology for?]]
The UCD MSc in Evolutionary Biology course is tailored for bright and motivated science graduates wishing to advance their career in evolutionary biology, either by bridging the gap between undergraduate and doctoral level education, or providing the breadth and depth of knowledge to build up a career in science communication.

[[What will I learn from the MSc in Evolutionary Biology?]]
1) An advanced knowledge of the processes, mechanisms and theory of evolution, with emphasis on research, which will provide the basis for the development and application of your original ideas.
2) The ability to apply your knowledge to formulate hypotheses and to test them using appropriate tools and problem-solving skills.
3) The ability to interpret morphological, molecular and/or simulated data using logical approaches based on evolutionary theory and the maturity to forecast the wider implications and consequences of your interpretations and conclusions.
4) The ability to communicate to a specialist and non-specialist audience, in a clear and unambiguous way, the results of your investigations and/or the rationale underlying them. Strong focus will be put on writing (popular articles, scientific papers), and presenting orally.
5) The confidence and the maturity to continue studying and critically appraise the scientific literature – especially in areas of controversy – in a largely autonomous manner.

[[How will I benefit from this course?]]
You will obtain a Graduate level qualification in a highly reputed University, currently ranked in the world’s top 100 universities (Times Higher Education Supplement 2009).
You will be taught by the strongest and broadest team of evolutionary biologists in Ireland and have full involvement in active research groups.
You will get a chance to collect and analyse your own data and write up a manuscript to be submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal and, as a result, significantly enhance your resume.
You will have the opportunity to develop your presentation skills for both specialist and lay audiences.

[[What is the UCD MSc in Evolutionary Biology programme about?]]
The course is about the eclectic nature of biological evolution. Evolution underpins all areas of biology. One hundred-and-fifty years after the publication of Darwin’s “The Origin of Species”, evolutionary theory occupies an ever so central role in modern societies, constantly contributing to advances in medicine, environmental sciences, psychology, etc. An increased public awareness of evolutionary biology feeds debates on the impact that evolutionary theory has on our lives – our understanding of the natural world, the origin of life and the ways that humans are subject to natural selection.

Entry Requirements

A recognized BSc honours degree (or equivalent experience) in a related subject, such as biology, ecology, zoology, geology, cellular/molecular biology, biochemistry, environmental biology, marine biology. If English is not your native language, unless you have done your primary degree through English in an English speaking country, an English language qualification is required for all programmes.
