The programme offers in-depth teaching on Irish writing from Farquhar and Swift to Heaney and Boland. Among the topics covered in specialist seminars are: W.B. Yeats, Early Theatre, The Novel and The Story, Joyce’s Ulysses, Drama in Performance, Beckett and Contemporary Theatre, Gender and Nation, Theorising Ireland. Students also work with a writer-in-residence (recent visitors have included John McGahern, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Joseph O’Connor, and Claire Keegan), and at the latter stage of the academic year, students produce a short dissertation on a topic of their choosing. A significant number of students proceed to doctoral studies in UCD or elsewhere.
