Applied Bioscience Skills for Industry

Course Description

A limited number of funded places are available for Scottish/EU fee status students starting in September 2016 to help talented students join this key growth sector for the Scottish economy.

The MSc Applied Bioscience Skills for Industry has been designed to meet the increasing requirement of the industrial scientific sectors for high-quality science graduates who not only possess outstanding laboratory skills but also have a clear understanding of the procedures and legislation that are essential to conduct high-class research in an industrial environment.

Developed in consultation with industry, this course will give you the skills employers have told us are often lacking in science degree graduates to appraise scientific problems; design and execute experimental programmes; and understand quality and intellectual property issues. Scientific research is placed in the context of national and international regulatory requirements and will draw on the considerable research-teaching linkages that exist within the university. Successful completion of the course will enhance your employment prospects in a highly competitive market.

You will be based at the university’s Division of Health Research, at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness, which houses state-of-the-art laboratories.

You will gain an understanding of issues around quality control, regulation and intellectual property.
You will develop skills that are highly marketable in the life sciences, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.


Core modules are:
Applied Laboratory Skills
Quality, Regulation and Intellectual Property in an Industrial Context
Advanced Laboratory Research Project
Quantitative Research and Data Analysis

You will also choose:
Two relevant modules from the existing university postgraduate catalogue (subject to approval by the Programme Leader)
To achieve the award of MSc you must complete a research dissertation.

The University of the Highlands and Islands is pleased to offer a limited numbers of places with full tuition fee support for Scottish/EU fee status students on this course starting in September 2016.
Fees will be funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programmes,

To be eligible for this funding students must meet the criteria for Scottish or EU fee status and be domiciled in the Highlands and Islands Transition Region for the duration of their studies.

In accordance with funding regulations, tuition fee support will only be available to eligible students who are self-funding i.e. who are not in receipt of funding for tuition fees from other sources, including employers.
Applications will be accessed as they are received by the university and the tuition fee support allocated when unconditional offers are made by us to successful, eligible applicants.

Carnegie Cameron Taught Postgraduate Bursaries - 4 Awards

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of the Highlands and Islands and should have firmly accepted that offer. Applicants who do not hold an offer of admission by the deadline will not be considered for the award.Criteria
The bursary will be awarded on the basis of academic merit with due consideration also being given to financial circumstances.Selection Procedure
A Selection Committee will meet in June 2016 to review the applications. All applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of June.

The bursaries will be awarded to applicants who are accepted for admission on either a one year full-time or two year part-time basis for a taught postgraduate programme of study at the University of the Highlands and Islands. To be eligible, applicants must;Be Scottish by birth OR
Be of Scottish extraction (have at least one parent born in Scotland) OR
Have received three full years of secondary, further and/or higher education in Scotland

University of the Highlands and Islands Alumni Discount - No. of awards TBC

A 10% discount in tuition fee is available to degree graduates from the University of the Highlands and Islands on any of our taught postgraduate courses. The alumni discount applies only to the tuition fee element and does not apply to any additional costs which may be required to complete the course. The discount cannot be applied retrospectively and must be requested before or at the time of paying the first year fee.The alumni discount is not available in conjunction with any bursary or scholarship or combinable with any discounts from the university.

2:1 honours degree in a biological or biomedical sciences subject, applicants with a 2:2 honours degree will be considered on an individual basis.Or a postgraduate diploma or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an honours degree. This course is currently not available to international students requiring a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK..
