MA in Applied Professional Studies (Leadership and Management)

Course Description

This MA programme is an innovative Masters programme which aims to give senior managers a consolidating qualification for their formal academic and professional responsibilities in leadership and management. The qualification does this by seeking confirmation of the learner’s higher responsibilities in managing in a strategic context, their relevant experience of managing & leading people and explanation of events where they have been a pivotal leader. They should also possess a keen motivation to professionally discuss and evaluate their knowledge and skills within a management capacity and also ideally have a first degree or where not available, clearly demonstrate significant management competence and intellectual skills. This professional discourse is undertaken in the Accrediting and Building on Learning module.

The remaining 2 modules of Research Methods and Work Based Study provide an excellent platform for enhancing applied research at Masters level with the programme concluding in a relevant work based research report in an area of leadership or business management which may be aligned to the learner’s continuing professional development objectives.

The programme is delivered through a blended learning mode i.e. through use of LearningSpace and Mahara Portfolio as key e-learning tools with the added value of tutor support through face to face meeting, email and telephone. There is the opportunity to undertake this programme of applied study remotely with access to learning resources and tutor facilitation on-line

Entry Requirements

The programme is intended for those practising professionals who are working or have recently worked at a management level for at least 3 years in order to meet with the higher degree learning outcome expectations of the taught MA Leadership and Management modules. They should have been involved with implementing operational plans within their department / functional area, line management of employees, controlling of other resources such as financial budget and capital investment as well as having some strategic knowledge of their organisation’s position within the wider business environment
