Postgraduate Certificate in Dementia

Course Description

In Ireland, 44,000 people have a dementia diagnosis. Globally, the prevalence of dementia is expected to double within the next 20 years.

It is against this backdrop that the online interdisciplinary Postgraduate Certificate in Dementia has been developed to prepare students in the delivery of high-quality support and care to dementia sufferers. Graduates of this programme will promote excellent practice in the care of dementia sufferers, allowing them to live with dignity.

The online programme has been designed to promote collaboration between various disciplines working with dementia sufferers, and students will develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the role nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, and social work plays in dementia care. Modules on Ways of Understanding Dementia, Critical Issues in Assessment and Care Planning and Enhancing the Experience of Living with Dementia will be taught throughout the course of the year.

Entry Requirements

1. have a minimum of one year’s professional experience in supporting persons with dementia within the past two years; 2. be working in an area where dementia care is delivered for the duration of the course; 3. normally hold an honours degree in a relevant discipline; or otherwise satisfy the selection panel that they have the ability to complete and benefit from the course.
