Ageing, Mental Health And Dementia PGCert (Distance Learning)

Course Description

This distance learning programme is designed for professional and other interested individuals working with or caring for older adults with mental health issues. This course is designed, and operationalised, utilising the skill and experience of an inter-professional / interagency curriculum team.

This award represents a commitment to the advancement of Older Peoples Mental Health Services. The shift in culture towards choice, person centeredness and mental health promotion are identified as key components in curricula development (DH 2004b) and the commitment to increasing the understanding of Dementia is paramount in this award (DH 2009). Caring for older people, “....needs to be recognised for its high value to the patients, and the distinct skill set required to lead its provision.” (Francis 2013).

These fundamental principles and key policy drivers (DH 2008, DH 2013) serve to underpin positive practice and are therefore an important component of this award. Achievement of these attributes are linked to the core modules of the award and are reflected in the educational aims and learning outcomes.
