A professional doctorate is designed for those who remain committed to their chosen career, but who wish to bring to it the skills of research, analysis and reflection that are best learnt in a University environment. The programme is designed to use the experience and questions that students bring from their professional life, and to support them in thinking about them. This means that by the end of their studies they should have produced a substantial piece of original research and contributed something unique to the knowledge-base of their profession. The structure of the award is designed to give the student substantial, structured support as they return to study and while they are developing their own research ideas, through a range of taught modules and through the opportunity to share experience with other students. This provides a firm base for the research project and the writing of their thesis. The option of a Masters in Research Methods (MRes) for those wishing to complete the taught elements.
