On the Engineering Extended MSc you will spend your first semester studying modules that have been written to provide you with the academic, professional and technical skills that you will need to succeed on your chosen award. All engineering students on the Extended MSc study the same modules for one semester and then study specialist modules depending on their chosen discipline.
This means that whether you have chosen the Aeronautical, Automotive, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronic or Telecommunication route, you will study the following modules in your first semester: -Academic English: This module will help you to develop your English Language speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and will introduce you to the conventions of academic writing. -Study skills & Employability: This module will help you to develop the skills and knowledge required to support study at Masters level. It will also help you to develop skills that will aid you in the job market and will look at things such as writing a C.V. and creating a personal development plan. -Engineering Principles: Basic electrical measurement techniques Introduction to Xilinx Digital Design software to enter and simulate the operation of a number of logic designs. Undertake a simple electrical systems test in a simulation environment such as MATLAB and analyse the results to provide performance measures. Design a cellular network and/or a computer data network using simulation packages such as Mentum Planet or OPNet software. -Mathematical Applications: As an engineering graduate you should already have a strong mathematical knowledge. This module will revise your existing knowledge and introduce you to some of the more advanced mathematical concepts deployed in the field of professional engineering. Where appropriate you will utilise software to support and enhance the problem solving and analysis techniques met in this module, allowing you to hone an essential skill for the modern industry based working environment
After successfully completing the first semester, you will concentrate on your chosen core engineering discipline. You will study a total of 8 core and option modules as set out in your award structure. NOTE a placement requires an extended visa which, under UKVI regulations, must be applied for in your home country after you have secured a placement.
The theme of the award is Power Electronics in Electrical supply industry. The module content and the award structure are designed so that this theme permeates through the award. The key modules, which have industrial input are "Power Electronics in Electric Utility Systems" , "Flexible AC Transmission systems" and "Power System Protection" . The option modules such as Energy Management and Control systems provide the students with the additional knowledge and skills for the formation of a true power electronics engineer. You will study 4 modules in the first semester.
Career prospects are excellent. There is a severe shortage of Electrical Engineers worldwide. In particular the renewable energy sector is expanding and it is predicted that 1.5 million jobs will be available worldwide. Students are being offered jobs even before they complete the award. In the second semester you will study 4 further modules. Upon successful completion of the project you will be awarded the MSc.
Normal requirements are at least a UK second class honours degree or equivalent in a related engineering or technology discipline. If you do not meet the above but have significant appropriate experience, your application will be considered, provided that you satisfy the University that you are capable of responding to the challenge of postgraduate work. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
