Music Technology, MSc

Course Description

This course is for students who wish to develop a deep understanding of the technologies and principles behind modern music production and distribution. In addition to gaining the skills necessary to analyse and evaluate modern music technology systems, students will also have opportunities to undertake practical music production work using the University’s extensive facilities. The award focuses on a wide range of creative and technological areas including advanced recording techniques, acoustics, mastering, digital sound synthesis, music software development and sound design.

Course content

By studying the MSc in Music Technology you will start your PgC period by studying three core modules and one option. For the PgD stage you will study four more modules including one option. The final stage of the award involves undertaking a dissertation based on a Music Technology area agreed with your supervisor.

Advanced Recording Techniques
Negotiated Studies in Music Technology
Mastering and Signal Processing in Music
Applied Acoustics (Semester One Option)
Computer Music Composition (Semester One Option)

Pro Tools for Music Production
Creative Music Software Design
Research Methods for Music Technology
Electronics for Musicians (Semester Two Option)
Interactive Multimedia Composition and Performance (Semester Two Option)
Students will also complete a 60 credit dissertation.

Entry Requirements

Normal requirements are at least a UK second class honours degree or equivalent in a related disciplineIf you do not meet the above but have significant appropriate experience, your application will be considered, provided that you satisfy the University that you are capable of responding to the challenge of postgraduate work. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you are fluent enough to cope with the course. A minimum score of IELTS 6 or TOEFL 550 (213 computer-based) is normally required.
