This course is designed for those who want to fast-track into a career in Journalism. This is a highly vocational award and has full accreditation from the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). Staffordshire University enjoys strong links with the journalism industry and our teaching staff have many years experience of working in newspapers, online journalism, radio and television.
You will benefit from working with a team of top journalists and academics and learn how to self operate as a multi-media journalist. Our focus is on combining theory and practice within a lively and engaging atmosphere that replicates the real world of journalism. The emphasis is on independent study, developing a portfolio and pursuing career prospects. The award follows a programme of continuous assessment and requires students to undertake a fully assessed work placement.
Students are able to sit the NCTJ qualifications in Reporting, Law, Public Affairs, Video Journalism, Production, Portfolio and Shorthand while on course. The latest industry-standard equipment is used and stories relating to events in the local community, national politics, international affairs, sports news and celebrity gossip are all covered.
National newsrooms visit: The course includes a three-day visit to London in January when students get the chance to visit the heart of the industry – the main newsrooms. We visit Sky News, Sky Sports News, ITV News (formerly ITN), the Daily Telegraph and others. The trip is a huge opportunity for students to observe newsrooms in operation at close quarters and make valuable contacts. The cost is included in the course fees.
This course is accredited by the NCTJ. This means, that while you are studying your Journalism programme you are strongly advised to attain the NCTJ’s Diploma in Journalism, which employers still view above all else as a mark of professional ability and competence. In short, they are essential to help you get your first break in a career in journalism.
