MSc Tourism Management


Course Description

This course is a conversion course, it is ideal for graduates who would like to change subjects or career direction.

This course reviews a range of key issues, challenges and developments in tourism management, with particular focus on the relationships between tourism and the wider economic, environmental and socio-cultural context.

The course aims to develop your management, research and analytical skills to allow you to operate at a high level within this dynamic industry. During your studies, you'll meet industry experts, with the opportunity to take a professional placement, network and share knowledge and experience whilst learning in a structured environment. The course also offers a unique opportunity to mix with a diverse range of nationalities, allowing you to increase your inter-cultural competence. This is vital to tourism management in an increasingly globalised world. Thus, the course prepares graduates to develop within a variety of potential career paths.

We are internationally known for our quality tourism courses and research activities - in the REF2014 tourism at BU was rated as joint 1st in the UK, based on its internationally recognised research. This course is delivered by staff who are actively involved in research and consultancy, ensuring that the curriculum and discussions are informed by cutting edge knowledge and practice. Our team includes Professor John Fletcher and Professor Adam Blake who specialise in economic aspects of tourism development, Professor Adele Ladkin who is a leading researcher on labour and employment in tourism and hospitality, Professor Dimitrios Buhalis who is a known expert of strategic marketing and the use of technology in tourism and Professor Stephen Page who is the author of leading text books in tourism education.

Placement

As part of this course you can take an optional minimum 30-week work placement giving you further hands-on experience and understanding of the industry. The placement will take place after the taught elements of the course are complete.

BU Sport Scholarship - 20+ Awards

For September 2017 or January 2018 entry.The BU Sport Scholarship is available to high level sporting athletes coming to study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at BU. The scholarship is designed to provide you with the funding you need to develop your sporting abilities and take them to the next level.You can apply for up to £5,000 of funding and put this money towards coaching, equipment, competition entry fees, travel expenses or/or support services.You must demonstrate excellence in your chosen sport, and be part of a Regional, National and/or International squad and compete at that level. Athletes receiving a scholarship will ideally represent BU in the BUCS programme (League and Individual), as well as themselves and/or their club at regional, national or international level. Individual athletes will also need to be competitive with top performers within the BUCS programme.

You must be a high performing sportsperson and have the desire to continue to develop in the sporting arena, as well as academically

BU Music Scholarships - 15 Awards

For September 2017 or January 2018 entry. If you’re passionate about music and want to continue to develop your talents while you’re studying for your degree, our BU Music scholarships are here to support you. Some of the money you’re awarded will go towards regular music lessons for your main instrument or voice with one of the university’s tutors, but you can use the remainder to see your favourite artists in concert, buy new music for your collection or even to pick up a new outfit to wear on stage - whatever fuels your musical passion.There are two types of music scholarships available - major award and minor award.

£1,150 (major award) or £450 (minor award)

Eligibility

To apply for one of these awards, you must be able to demonstrate that you are a talented musician or vocalist and that you have been involved in ensemble activity
Any UK, EU or international applicant applying for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course at BU.

Academic Scholarship - 20+ Awards

For courses starting in September 2017 or January 2018.The Academic Scholarship recognises outstanding academic achievement among our postgraduate applicants. To qualify for this award, you need to demonstrate an excellent academic profile that is relevant to your course.If you are enrolling on any full-time taught postgraduate course at BU (including CPE, LPC and PG Dip Legal Practice), or a Master’s by Research, you will automatically be awarded the scholarship, provided that you meet the above requirements. The scholarship is paid in the form of a reduction to your tuition fees.

Eligibility

As a minimum, you need an upper second-class honours (2i) from a Bachelor’s degree (or an overseas equivalent), or CPE with a merit profile
Any UK or EU student applying for a full-time taught postgraduate degree at BU

You cannot be in receipt of any other scholarships.

For courses starting in September 2017 and January 2018.This scholarship is available to any UK or EU applicant for a full-time taught Master's degree in a Tourism and Hospitality subject from the Faculty of Management, excluding Postgraduate Diplomas, who can demonstrate an outstanding academic profile relating to their course.Five available for September entry and two for January entry.

You will need to have a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree (2i) and must fill in an application further highlighting your academic achievements and explaining why you should be considered for this scholarship

This includes Master’s by research, CPE, LPC and PG Dip Legal Practice, but excludes distance-learning courses, Postgraduate Diplomas and certain courses delivered by the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences.

An Honours degree is normally required at 2.2 or above, or substantial industrial experience at senior management level. Applicants are encouraged to provide details of relevant work experience. If English is not your first language you'll need IELTS 6.0 (Academic) or above.
