(Student Profile)

Sian Tomlinson

Sian chose Bournemouth University because of its reputation in the industry and from recommendations from previous students. It was also an economically viable option, as Bournemouth is her home town.

When asked why she decided to embark on a postgraduate degree, Sian said: “I chose postgraduate study because I wanted a change in career path and thought that a qualification at Masters level would enhance my chance of employment.”

“The course is very industry-focused and the University regularly invites guest speakers from the industry to help students to build contacts for the future. Whilst at BU, I have also tried to gain as much experience as possible through non-academic projects. I have gained a lot through working with the Media School’s in-house production company RedBalloon.”

Before coming to BU, Sian had rather vague career aspirations as Producing was very new to her, but the course has helped her to develop and refine my interests.

One piece of advice Sian would give to prospective students considering applying to BU and the Media School courses is: “Make the most of the non-academic projects you can get involved with and build as many contacts as possible.”

This is sound advice for those looking to gain a postgraduate degree, particularly if their aim is to focus on their career success by improving their career prospects.
