Secondary and Middle Level Teacher Certification M.Ed.

Course Description

The UW Bothell Secondary and Middle Level Teacher Certification Master of Education Program integrates courses and structured field experiences. Students will be challenged to apply and extend the lessons learned in class to work with youth in several school settings. Endorsements are available in Biology, English/Language Arts, Mathematics, History, Social Studies and General Science (pending).

An ELL Endorsement is now an option with any of our core endorsements and can be done concurrently while in the program.

[[Is this program for you?]]
If you want to teach middle level or secondary youth...

If you have a Bachelor's degree or higher with significant coursework in science, biology, English or humanities, mathematics, or history ...

If you're committed to becoming a teacher who is thoughtful about your own and your students' learning...

Upon successfully completing the program, you will earn a Master of Education degree and your Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate in one or more of the endorsement areas listed above.

[[Overview of the Program]]
The program is designed to be completed in six consecutive quarters. Each fall, a group of students will begin the program as a cohort and progress together to complete the Master of Education in the spring of their second year. Students in the cohort may pursue endorsements in any of the five endorsement areas (Biology, English/Language Arts, History, Mathematics, and Social Studies).

During each quarter of field experience, students engage in reflective seminars in which they examine the professional role of the teacher and the complexities of work in schools. They experience a holistic program, not merely a sequence of loosely connected courses and classroom experiences.

This is the general schedule for the program. The schedule may be adjusted in future academic years as the program is typically in a state of continuous change and improvement.

Entry Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; AND Transcript Evaluation to ensure completion of appropriate courses in endorsement area; AND 3.0 GPA in the last 90 quarter credits or 60 semester credits of graded upper-division coursework; AND 60 hours of work with secondary or middle level youth, with at least 30 hours in U.S. public high school classrooms.
