Master of Arts in Sociology

Course Description


The Master of Arts program in sociology is designed to train graduate students in theory, methods, and statistics for the analysis of social phenomena. Students are prepared for a variety of careers, as well as for further graduate study in sociology.
Admission to the M.A. Program

Admission to the sociology masters program requires a bachelor's degree in sociology or its equivalent, a GPA of 3.0 or higher on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work and on all graduate work, along with a personal statement (2-3 pages) of interest and two letters of recommendation. Students without a bachelor's degree in sociology will be considered if the admission committee believes that the student shows academic promise.
Job Placements

Our MA recipients pursue a variety of careers, including teaching at community colleges and working for federal state, and local governments, in non-profit organizations, in community service agencies, in the criminal justice system, in the private sector, and for international organizations such as the United Nations. A significant number of them continue on to pursue doctoral training in sociology and other disciplines.
