Master of Arts in Early Childhood

Course Description

The early years of a child’s life are probably the most crucial for establishing a solid foundation for health, well-being and lifelong learning. As awareness increases of the critical importance of healthy development and learning in the early years, so too does the need for early childhood professionals who have the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for guiding and supporting young children and families.

During this online Master of Arts in Early Childhood, you’ll explore current research and fascinating insights related to the development of the whole child—body, mind, and spirit. You’ll examine current thinking on the strengths and challenges of young children, as you actively engage in theoretical discussions on child development and learn to apply these theories in culturally responsive ways.

Through critical reflection, self-assessment, goal setting and other practical tools, this programme will help you grow as an early childhood professional and make a difference at a local, regional or global level. You’ll develop the confidence and skills to have a positive impact on the development and learning of young children, their families, and on the field as a whole, while helping advance your career potential with a deeper understanding of early childhood theory and practice.

Each of the Roehampton Online masters programmes has been designed to help you move forward in your life and follows the same basic structure.

Every online programme is made up of seven modules and a research project. Every module lasts 12 weeks. You then have a break of approximately two weeks before resuming your studies. Your research project is much like a dissertation, in which all previous leaning culminates in an academic research paper. Modules equate to 20 academic credits while your research project carries 40 credits – but you have 26 weeks to complete that part of your programme.

(Student Profile)

Folakemi Abraham

“I have studied at a university in London and met others from different countries, but the impact was not as great as what I am experiencing with online learning. The interactive nature of learning at the University of Roehampton Online is a lot more effective, personal, and real.”

Parthiban Devanathan

“I enjoy the flexibility I’ve found at the University of Roehampton Online. I can use whatever spare time available to me to concentrate on my studies, my homework, and my shared activities. It also means talking to the other colleagues to learn from their knowledge and share my knowledge with them.”

Paula Barnes

“I think the thing that stood out more than anything for Roehampton, was that somebody took the time to talk to me and took me through the application process.”
