MSc / PG Dip / PG Cert Obesity: Risks and Prevention

Course Description

This postgraduate degree course provides a solid scientific base on obesity as well as important prevention strategies. Our approach will enable you to understand current and emerging obesity interventions, and conduct novel research projects to help understand and combat obesity.

This was the first MSc course on obesity to be established in London. The course examines the problem of an excess of energy intake over energy expenditure from an integrative perspective: risk factors for obesity and risks associated with obesity are considered as well as strategies for reducing these risks. You will develop the knowledge for understanding interventions and research projects focused on combating obesity for all ages and different population groups.

The programme is designed for students from a range of backgrounds including new graduates from life sciences or psychology as well as health professionals with a strong interest in the prevention and management of obesity; those with a suitable background in exercise coaching or working in the private sector health and fitness industry will be able to gain a well-recognised Masters level qualification. The PGDip option (120 credits) is particularly suitable for those interested in updating their knowledge without conducting a research project.

You will develop an advanced understanding of metabolic processes and psychosocial issues of overweight and obesity and treatments. You will also gain an understanding of the fundamentals of individual and public health approaches to obesity.

Throughout your time at Roehampton, you’ll be supported in a welcoming and diverse community of staff and students in high-quality facilities on a beautiful parkland campus. You will have access to our state-of-the art facilities and excellent laboratories including a food lab complete with sensory analysis tasting booths and specialist laboratories for physiology, microbiology and computing.
