Biology, M.S.

Course Description


The purpose of the Master of Science degree program in the Department of Biology is to prepare graduates for high-level careers in various areas of biology. The department offers the M.S. degree with the option of selecting from a variety of thesis research topics based on individual research interests of the faculty.

Biology at Tennessee Tech

You can earn a master’s degree in biology at Tennessee Tech, as well as a doctoral degree in environmental science with a concentration in biology.
Whatever program you choose, the biology department and its robust research programs will prepare you to take the lead professionally. Our graduates have gone on to work for a variety of federal and state agencies. TTU alumni have joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority, National Park Services, various wildlife and fisheries agencies, park services, departments of health and the environment, and regulatory agencies. With a graduate degree in biology from TTU, you could be next.
The master’s program has a thesis requirement, and students will work closely with our faculty to make discoveries and to expand upon existing knowledge.


Home of the Tennessee Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and the university’s Center for the Management, Utilization, and Protection of Water Resources, our program places a special emphasis on protecting and studying the unique ecology of the state.

The biology department has nearly 20 faculty members, whose interests range broadly across the field. We also have several research associates who are supported by outside contracts and grants but function equally to support our students.

Graduate Assistantships

Teaching Assistants — A limited number of teaching assistantships may be available that include paid tuition and fees along with a monthly stipend in return for work teaching undergraduates. The responsibilities of teaching assistants include (but are not limited to) assisting faculty with grading, teaching labs and providing help sessions for students.

Research Assistants — A limited number of research assistantships may be available contingent on funding ability. Students with research assistantships are expected to conduct research as directed by the grant and supervising faculty.

Entry Requirements

Guidelines for full admission into the program include a minimum overall undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4-point scale). Applicants for admission to the M.S. Program in the Department of Biology with Quantitative and Verbal Revised GRE scores in the 40th percentile or higher, and a minimum Analytical Writing score of 4.0, do not require Graduate Policy Committee review. International application deadlines: October 1, 2015 for spring (January) 2016 start and May 1, 2016 for fall (August) 2016 start.
