This course will focus on the modes by which cultural memory survives from one era to another. It will also explore the many ways writers have chosen to reactivate and commemorate the past in their work, or have used writing itself as a commemorative practice. The course spans a broad range of issues, genres and historical periods (from the Renaissance to the present day).
