MA in French

Course Description

This course explores the way in which a range of key moments, themes and issues in French cultural history have been represented in, and given shape by, narrative. The course sets narrative within a theoretical context, and looks at such issues as the emergence of Realism and Naturalism as dominant modes of narrative, the relationship between gender and the choice of genre, the rise of autobiography as a means of narrating the self, and the fertile intersections between the novel and visual arts such as painting, film and photography.
