MA Documentary Practice


Course Description

This programme supports students who wish to become professional documentary filmmakers and/or research academics. The MA in Documentary Practice provides the ideal creative production environment within a research-based postgraduate Film Studies department. This combination of production professionalism and academic excellence is key to promoting intellectual, current, and socially engaged documentary makers.

Documentary is becoming increasingly popular with both film and TV audiences due to recent successes in the genre such as Senna, Bowling for Columbine, and Supersize me. This programme will allow you to develop a career and skills in production, documentary making, or develop an academic career.

* The department is ideally situated in the heart of the East End, in an immensely exciting part of London, to our west, and to the Olympic Park emerging in time for the London Olympics in 2012 to our east.
* The teaching staff have national and international reputations in their fields. You will be taught by experienced filmmakers, as well as by leading academics in areas which cover many different periods of film history and which draw on films and cinema traditions from around the world.

* During your study you will be able to produce three individual documentary productions, each of twenty-three minutes in length (programme length for 30 minute TV broadcast).

The Department of Film has its own postgraduate production company which produces documentary and fiction work, as well as its own studio facilities and state-of-the-art 41-seat cinema.

QMUL-Commonwealth Scholarships - 20+ Awards

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is proud to be working in partnership with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK to offer a wide range of scholarships for postgraduate study at Master’s and PhD level.
In 2017-18 we will be hosting an unprecedented number of Commonwealth Scholars from across the globe.Commonwealth Scholarships at QMUL typically cover full overseas tuition fees, living costs, airfares, and a variety of other expenses. Scholars from developing Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply for these awards.You can apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship for Master’s (one-year courses only). All subject areas are eligible, although the CSC’s selection criteria give priority to applications that demonstrate the strongest relevance to development.

QMUL-Chevening Scholarships - 20+ Awards

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) works closely with the Chevening - the UK government’s international scheme aimed at developing global leaders - to provide a large number of full scholarships for study on our one-year Masters courses.Every year QMUL hosts a large cohort of the 1500 Chevening Scholars who come to study at universities all over the UK. In 2016-17 we have a record of 87 scholars joining QMUL from countries across the globe!

To be eligible for a Chevening Award you must:
- Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country

QMUL HESPAL Scholarships - Single Award

HESPAL aims to help create the next generation of senior academics who can maintain international quality standards at Palestinian universities and to develop renewed, sustainable links between Palestinian and UK universities.
The Scheme will upgrade junior academic staff in Palestinian universities through a Masters Scholarship programme. Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has one scholarship available through the HESPAL scheme.Study areas covered include: Business, Economics and Finance; Educational Management; Political Sciences and International Relations; Human Rights and Governance; Agriculture; Engineering; Law, Management; Environmental Studies; Water management, Nursing, TSOL, Human Resourses, Economics, Literature, Linguistics, IT, Science programmes, Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Infrastructure, Clean Energy and Conservation Strategies, MA Energy Management, Energy Conservation, Sustainable Energy, ICT, nanotechnologies and energy. The scholarship covers the following:
- tuition fees
- pre-departure briefing from the British Council
- arrival allowances
- thesis allowances

Eligibility

- Applicant must be a resident citizen of Palestinian Territories.
- Applicant must be currently employed by the Palestinian university which nominates her/him, which must be one of the participating Palestinian universities.
- Applicant will have a Masters degree from a Palestinian university with a minimum grade of very good (and equivalent to at least a 3.0 Bachelor’s Degree from UK).
- Applicant must sign a written undertaking to return to Palestinian university within a time frame agreed with their university, normally one year.

Entry Requirements

You will need an upper second class honours degree in a humanities or creative arts discipline, and will have an informal interview on application. Graduates from non-humanities disciplines are also welcome to apply, but will be asked to complete a written assignment. International students will need to be highly proficient in English for academic purposes.
