MBA

Course Description

The QMU MBA fulfils the University’s vision of providing an “industry relevant and interdisciplinary” experience for students. We
consulted widely with employers and industry experts in devising this course. We know that employers look ‘beyond the letters’ when recruiting and want employees with real-life experience; we’ve replaced the traditional dissertation with a student-centred, business focused project that allows you to investigate, design and engage in a real world project. In a business environment that is constantly changing, employers told us that they want staff that can apply their knowledge effectively within the workplace, and critically within
the dynamics of high-performing groups and teams. Our courses take a clear and consistent focus on leadership, teams and
dynamics which challenge you to take on different roles in delivering objectives.

The teaching team who deliver the masters courses have experience of leading high-profile teams in industry and academia as well as the public and third sectors. They are enthusiastic about their areas of
expertise and just as enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with you. Your fellow students will come from a wide range of geographical, educational and business backgrounds, enhancing the overall experience. What our students have in common is an enthusiasm for learning and an ambition to succeed. If you are considering applying and can add your mix of enthusiasm and ambition to the course we would be delighted to discuss entry.

Teaching learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and carry out independent learning. You will be expected to participate in discussions, develop ideas and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods will include management reports,
essays, exams, reflection on practice, and group work with presentations. A unique aspect of the course is the challenge to
design, lead and reflect upon a project that focuses on an external business partner. A central part of the course experience is
the regular involvement of industry through specific visits, guest lectures, scenario planning and project opportunities. Class sizes are normally 10-30 students.

Teaching hours and attendance

Modules studied on-campus require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are full or part-time. In most instances the taught elements of the full-time course occur on Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) and Thursday.
Part-time students have the option to select different routes each year.

Links with industry/professional bodies

QMU is an Approved Centre of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the only professional body in the UK dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. As an approved centre, we are working towards facilitating CMI professional qualifications within our postgraduate awards. The MBA involves a number of guest lecturers and visits to industry, for example Diageo, New Lanark Heritage Centre, Nairn’s, Glenkinchie Distillery, and Luca’s.

Modules

You will normally complete six core modules and two route specific modules.
Examples of core modules include:
Strategy*/ Business Economics+/ International Marketing+/ Financial Management+/Managing People+/The Effective Manager+.
You will also complete the Business Impact and Practice Project (45 credits) which runs the full year.
* 30 credits +15 credits

Careers

Successful completion of the QMU MBA will prepare you for a range of management and leadership roles in differing sectors.

Quick Facts

There is a practical project instead of a dissertation. Students are challenged to research, plan, manage and evaluate a project in conjunction with an external business or organisation, allowing them to develop career-enhancing skills, confidence and opportunities.

Reflecting contemporary working practice, our teaching and assessment takes a strong group and team focus.

QMU prides itself on small numbers, our diverse community and developing strong personal relationships with our students. This allows us to arrange, and students to participate in, regular visits and events.

Entry Requirements

Traditionally, postgraduate students have an honours degree or equivalent and industry experience. We will consider recent graduates who can demonstrate additional capabilities. In addition, we also welcome applications from graduates with an ordinary degree who can show a period of post-graduation work experience or from those with substantial industry experience and a commitment to CPD.
