International Management (MSc)


Course Description

With this CMI accredited master's degree, graduates go on to successful international careers with a range of commercial and not-for-profit organisations around the world. On the MSc International Management course you will develop an understanding of a range of global businesses, their operations and the cultural differences of international management. You will study the various business functions, such as marketing, finance and strategy, taking in to account global environmental factors (economic, political and social) in which international organisations operate.

One of the big differences on this course is the focus on acquiring the skills you will need to work in international organisations. You will learn about a range of international organisations and develop your general management skills and intercultural management skills. You will gain practical experience by working on a live consultancy project for a commercial or not-for-profit organisation.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Each module is assessed using a range of different methods including examinations, assignments, individual or group reports and group presentations. This range of assessments will help you to develop the analytical and presentational that employers within different organisations look for.

Specialist facilities

The Business School Postgraduate Centre has a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, well equipped seminar rooms and a postgraduate lounge and private study area.

The Wheatley Campus library provides specialist business resources including more than 1,000 sets of UK and overseas companies' annual reports, statistics on all aspects of business and management, postgraduate MA, MBA, MSc and PhD theses in business and management and examination papers.

Field trips

On this course you can choose to participate in a trip to Boston, USA, and Budapest, Hungary. Here you will meet successful industry professional, visit companies, earn credits towards your degree and also take in some sightseeing.

Field trips are optional and may incur a cost.

The programme's accreditation by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) means that you can graduate with a second award of a Level 7 Diploma and eligibility for Chartered Management status. The CMI is the only body that awards Chartered Manager status, the hallmark of any professional manager.

Careers

On graduation from the MSc in International Management you will be able to pursue a range of different careers. Previous students have gained managerial positions in global organisations (commercial and not-for-profit), some have joined management consultancies and some are studying for a PhD and pursuing academic careers.

Research within the department of Business and Management brings together corporate strategy, competitive strategy, growth strategies, global business, international trade and foreign direct investment with subjects that focus on leadership, culture, motivation, practices, strategic human resource management and the management of the globalisation process.

Research areas and clusters

While you are studying at the Business School, you will be taught by research active academics who are experts in their field. Coming from very varied backgrounds, they bring a wealth of experience into their teaching, which will offer you new perspectives on business theories and help form your own research decisions.

Many tutors have industry experience or have carried out research in industry, which will help you to apply the theory that you have learnt to real life situations.

You must be a new full-time masters student starting your course in September 2011.These awards are open to UK, EU and International students unless otherwise stated. (2 x £2,000 awards are for international students only)You should have, or expect to obtain, a good honours degree or equivalent from a recognised institution of higher education, or have experience which demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard.Candidates receiving awards from other sources of funding which cover all their tuition fees will not be eligible for a John Henry Brookes Scholarship; eligibility is not affected by funding covering maintenance costs.

The Simon Williams Scholarship 2011 - 2 Awards

The Simon Williams scholarships have been established to commemorate the contribution to the Business School and the University of Simon Williams, Dean of the Business School from 1999 - 2005. The scholarship awards are £1,000 paid towards the cost of programme fees.Criteria
The award committee has identified several significant qualities associated with Simon which made his contribution so distinctive. A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate potential for achievement under these headings but the boundaries inevitably overlap and the committee will consider applications holistically, rather than expecting candidates to provide equally strong evidence under every heading. Candidates should, however, use the headings to structure the way in which they present their application.
1. Intellect
Academic achievement, both before and during an applicant’s time studying at Brookes, is one way of demonstrating intellectual potential but the committee will also be looking for other factors that indicate, for example, use of an analytical approach to solving practical problems or capacity to think creatively.
2. Industry
Under this heading the committee would expect to see evidence showing a high level of commitment to completing an undertaking, self-motivation and a willingness to work hard over and above general expectations.
3. Integrity
Under this heading the committee would expect to see demonstration of a candidate’s personal values in action – concern for others, understanding of the impact of their own behaviour on the groups to which they belong, high standards, loyalty and friendship.

Final year Oxford Brookes University Business School undergraduate students are eligible to apply.This includes students studying at Nilai College (Malaysia), CCCU (Hong Kong), POU (Poland), IIMT (India) and IBS (Hungary).This scholarship can be held simultaneously with other scholarships and awards.The scholarships will be announced annually.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of a second class honours degree (2:2) in any academic discipline, or equivalent overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification. Applicants who possess a diploma rather than a good degree may be eligible for entry provided they have compensatory work experience and can demonstrate career development. The MSc in International Management attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities. Applications are welcome from those in work and seeking continuing professional development.
