Rachael Ford

1415.jpg In order to bridge the gaps in my academic and professional skills I decided on studying for a postgraduate degree to facilitate a change of career into ecology consultancy. After initially speaking to numerous professionals within the industry the positive feedback I got on the course content for the MSc made up my mind to return to the Nottingham Trent University and enrol on the degree. The course covered modules directly relevant and transferable to working as an ecology consultant with the flexibility of part-time studying which allowed me to gain work experience whilst studying. The location and situation of Brackenhurst offered an excellent learning environment ensuring that different habitats and survey techniques could be learned and practised without always having to travel away from the University for practical lectures. The varied specialisms of the course tutors also ensured a wide variety of species and subjects were taught allowing students the opportunity to explore different areas of interest, particularly for dissertation topics. The degree also allowed for independent study without having to follow strict, structured assignment briefs to allow students to explore topics of personal interest and ensured the subject matter remained challenging and diverse.

The MSc and course content was well received by prospective employers and gave me a competitive edge over other candidates; I was able to gain full time employment as an ecology consultant within only a couple of months of completing the course.
