Equine Science can be studied at MSc, Pg Diploma or Pg Certificate level. Postgraduate study in Equine Science at Hartpury can be the start of many exciting opportunities. The programme consists of taught modules delivered via weekend study blocks to facilitate study alongside your career and a range of full and part time study options are available to suit your personal circumstances. The modules will increase your knowledge and understanding but a key focus is the application of how equine science can maximize performance, enhance career longevity or aid in selection of the performance horse, with a core goal of optimising the horse’s welfare. Throughout the modules, you will also gain ‘hands-on’ experience of modern technology, e.g. gait analysis and electromyography, utilized to assess performance which can build valuable skills for your future. The dissertation project allows you to take the knowledge and skills gained during the programme and apply them to a unique research project based upon your personal interest which could be linked to future career development or aspirations. Students are encouraged throughout their programme to attend conferences, present their research and become a member of the wider academic community including at our own annual Alltech-Hartpury Equine Performance conference.
As a postgraduate student of Equine Science, you will have a personal academic tutor to help support you to achieve your individual goals and interests. Study skills module weekends are also held during the induction period and combine with formative assessment opportunities to help support your academic development. This is combined with staff who are engaged with advancing equine science on the international stage yet remain accessible and committed to promoting your achievement. Traditional lectures will only be one part of your course. You’ll also learn through group and individual presentations and discussions, student-led seminar groups, analysis and application of case studies and experiential learning and simulations. Guest speakers from industry and professional bodies also regularly contribute to the programme. These innovative methods create an environment that is enjoyable, varied and provides effective learning.
The programme can be completed full time in one year; part time routes are available and should be planned with the Programme Manager.
Applicants should have at least a lower second class Honours Degree in a relevant subject. Students with non-relevant qualifications but with two or more years of relevant work experience or professional experience will be considered on an individual basis.
