MSc Coaching Science


Course Description

The MSc Coaching Science programme provides students with the opportunity to develop and explore their personal coaching practice alongside coaches from a range of sport disciplines. Core ‘Coaching Craft’ and ‘Reflective Practice’ modules examine key transferable skills and provide a theoretical framework which allows individuals to create a personalised ‘Professional Development Portfolio’ that charts their collaboration with guest contributors from a wide array of external governing bodies and agencies. Managed coaching observations provide a further important portfolio experience with a Postgraduate Certificate being awarded to students who complete this initial group of modules.

Those choosing to continue their studies move from the programme’s core to complete a Postgraduate Diploma with a selection of contextualised modules each focusing on a potential future site of employment. Not only do these components aim to develop understanding of teaching, coach education and high performing coach environments but they also tailor their assessment methods to mirror the demands of these professional roles and support long term engagement with advanced practitioners from these domains.

Postgraduate research itself is treated as a further context in which coaching scientists can increase their skills base with completion of a research process module allowing for a sound foundation from which to complete a dissertation project in order to convert their PG Diploma into a Master’s degree.

Currently the MSc Coaching Science programme can be completed full-time in one year or via part-time negotiated study plans ranging from 2 to 6 years depending on personal circumstances and career goals.

Greg Atkin

5180.jpg What I do:
I look after new rowers that have been identified and tested through the GB Rowing Start programme and develop them to move from the academy group to the development group. The aim is for them to then progress into the senior squad that will attend GB trials. I provide the athletes with solid foundations and technique for them to progress. I work in a high performance Sport Wales team with a physio, nutritionist, weightlifting coach and sports science staff all working together to produce top level GB Rowing athletes.

How Hartpury helped to get me there:
I was taken on as a rowing intern at Hartpury, which is a GB Rowing Start centre, while I was doing my full-time Masters in Coaching Science. I was working with Tom Pattichis (Hartpury rowing programme manager) as a mentor and the internship gave me the opportunity to coach rowers of all abilities, learning how to meet and solve different challenges in their development with the pressure of ensuring the continued success of the Hartpury rowing programme. I don’t think I would have got my role with Welsh Rowing had I not been able to show the theoretical skills I gained from my Masters as well as the practical experience I had from my coaching internship at Hartpury.

I’ve just taken on a new role as the Takoradi head coach. My job is to manage this new satellite academy, which discovers and nurtures young footballers through education, sport and character development so they become role models within football and for other young people in Ghana. As well as scouting for new kids, I have written the technical football curriculum, which aims to nurture the children’s ability on and off the pitch.

How Hartpury helped to get me there:
I combined my studies with coaching and eventually accepted a full-time role as Hartpury’s senior football coach and Elite Sport support officer. I combined this with a performance lifestyle assistant role, where I worked with individual student athletes. The opportunity to study and coach in the elite sports programmes enabled me to learn from the best and I supported my development through coach education courses and networking. The invaluable experience and contacts I made undoubtedly led to me securing my current role.

Entry Requirements

All applications will be reviewed on an individual basis but a guide would be a 2:2 classification or better in an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree relating to Sports Coaching / Sports Science / Social Science or significant and current experience of sport coaching, coach education, sport development or teaching.
