Course Description

MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The latest master programme to be offered by BI is the MSc of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Students will gain insight into development, project management within enterprises and entrepreneurial activities and thus skills that are in high demand.

“Few people have a total understanding of innovation processes, so there is clearly a need for specialist expertise. We have tested the idea on several industry leaders, who were very pleased,” says Tor Hernes, Professor and former Head of the BI Institute for Innovation and Economic Organisation.

The aim is to give students a complete overview of the processes of innovation and important elements that are involved. The course has been designed on the basis of a need within industry.

Training for success – Students will gain a good understanding of the factors that affect the process of innovation, and the way in which these factors interact and shape the outcome of the process. This makes it easier to understand how projects can be realised successfully. Some important elements that form a central part of the syllabus are theories of innovation, leadership, organisation and strategy. Students will also gain an insight into financing, legislation, marketing and technology.

The programme combines theoretical and practical knowledge, and it is also possible to specialise in one of two key areas: innovation or entrepreneurship. The first area concentrates more on knowledge of the processes of innovation and is aimed at those wishing to become involved in development within either private or public sector organisations. The entrepreneurship specialisation is aimed more at practical business development and is well suited to those wishing to be entrepreneurs or become involved with innovation. Within this specialisation, students will also study at Gründerskolen.

There is an opportunity to spend one term abroad, either under the direction of Gründerskolen or through the normal exchange scheme operated by BI.

Innovation Norway is positive – The Director of Communication at Innovation Norway, Kjetil Svorkmo Bergmann, is positive about the new Master’s Degree course. “Overall within industry there is a need for innovative resources. In addition, industry and society are entirely dependent upon us establishing new enterprises, something that Innovation Norway is actively working to promote. I think people will be better equipped to succeed in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship when they have obtained the relevant higher education,” he says.

Kjetil Svorkmo Bergmann’s views are supported by Managing Director Hans Martin Vikdal, also of Innovation Norway. “Norwegian companies are competing in an international market, either at home or globally. If they are to succeed, they must build their competitive advantages on a greater ability to innovate,” he explains.

“The introduction of innovation and entrepreneurship within higher education will move the subject up the agenda, and help to develop a positive culture of enterprise and innovation amongst students as well as within industry,” concludes Vikdal.

Thesis
The thesis work is an important, challenging, and rewarding part of your studies. It starts with the common courses in your first semester and is completed with the submission of your final thesis.

Academic requirements:
A solid academic record with a satisfactory GPA. See specific GPA requirements for the different programmes.
A satisfactory score (average 600) on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). A GMAT requirement waiver may be granted under certain conditions: contact the MSc administration for details.
A satisfactory score on IELTS or TOEFL language tests.
The requirements may be subject to change.
