Advanced Legal Practice (LLM)

About this course

Would you like the opportunity to integrate new knowledge with your current area of practice to further enhance your skills and career prospects?

The LLM Advanced Legal Practice course will allow you to undertake an in-depth study of a specialised legal topic under the supervision of one of our dedicated teaching team.

You will also develop your skills in legal research and the coherent presentation of this research in written format.

Designed for qualified lawyers, solicitors, barristers and those with an equivalent qualification, this course is delivered via distance learning across a one to two year period, allowing you to study at times convenient to you.

Applicants must successfully have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC), Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) or equivalent. This course is also open to those who are currently completing their legal qualification at Northumbria University.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must either: Have successfully completed the Law Society Finals Examination, Legal Practice Programme, Bar Finals Programme, Bar Vocational Course/Bar Professional Training Course or their equivalent. The completion of these programmes, which are postgraduate diplomas, entitles students to 120 points advanced standing.

Or

Have enrolled on Northumbria's Full Time Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) or Full Time Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the same time as they enrol to the LLM Advanced Legal Practice and be expected to complete either the BPTC/LPC within that academic year. The completion of the BPTC/LPC programmes, which are postgraduate diplomas, entitles students to 120 points advanced standing. Any student who enrols upon the BPTC/LPC at the same time as the LLM Advanced Legal Practice must satisfactorily complete the BPTC/LPC programme before they can be awarded the LLM Advanced Legal Practice.

Or

Have enrolled on Northumbria's Part Time BPTC, or Part Time LPC and have commenced their second year and are expected to complete the BPTC/LPC within that academic year. The completion of the BPTC/LPC programmes, which are postgraduate diplomas, entitles students to 120 points advanced standing. They will enrol on the LLM Advanced Legal Practice at the start of their second year. Any student who is enrolled upon the part-time BPTC/LPC at the same time as the LLM Advanced Legal Practice must satisfactorily complete their BPTC/LPC programme before they can be awarded the LLM Advanced Legal Practice.
