Our pathway courses are designed for those looking for support to meet either the language or the academic subject entry requirements for postgraduate study. They bridge any gaps in your existing skills level and give you the confidence to progress onto Newcastle Business School’s Masters provision.
The Graduate Diploma course consists of 120 credits delivered over two semesters and the Graduate Certificate course consists of 60 credits delivered over one semester. The two courses share a common core of modules; a 40 credit Business and Management in Context module and a 20 credit Developing Academic Skills for Business and Management module, designed to support your development of academic skills for future studies at postgraduate level.
The course is covered by the prestigious AACSB accreditation for Newcastle Business School, which was ‘Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education Awards 2015.

Teaching And Assessment
You will learn through a combination of the University’s e-learning platform (eLP) and electronic resources, and class contact through lectures, workshops and seminars. This blended approach recognises that significant learning takes place outside of the formally scheduled sessions through independent learning, and is intended to develop you as a critical, enquiring learner.
Our assessment philosophy was developed around Assessment for Learning (AfL). The key purpose is to foster your development as a student, enabling you to take responsibility in evaluating, judging and improving your own performance by actively using a range of feedback. These capabilities are at the heart of autonomous learning and are graduate qualities valued by employers and in professional practice.
All modules make extensive use of the university electronic Learning Platform (eLP) and the learning experience it offers. Module tutors use lecture capture software to record lectures for later streaming. This software also allows academics to make lectures available in a variety of downloadable formats for you to watch on your mobile devices when it is most convenient.
You will also be encouraged to access recorded lectures and TED talks that provide a solid grounding for complex business and management concepts, while authentic written texts such as journal article papers help you to develop strategies for reading and understanding arguments from complex language and ideas.
The course combines a research-led and research-tutored learning approach offered by the English Language and Business modules respectively. This allows you to develop your academic skills gained in previous studies and enhance your intellectual and professional competences required for postgraduate study in Business and Management.
The modules have been developed to meet your specific needs, and are research-informed and highly contemporary. Lectures and seminars are interactive to ensure that you fully understand how to apply the theories that you have learned, and to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your learning and appreciation of business issues.

Through this course we will provide you with a detailed understanding and knowledge of how business works, enhancing your attractiveness to potential employers through a specific approach to your personal development.
A key purpose of the course is to develop skills in areas such as academic writing, learning styles, working in teams, developing critical thinking skills, understanding research and how to make effective use out of journal articles in the specific context of business and management. The modules are research-informed and highly contemporary, with appropriate links to enhancing employability signposted throughout.
Modules on the course are specifically designed to enhance your reflection and evaluation skills, to prepare you for entry to postgraduate study in Business and Management. Classroom-based sessions will provide an opportunity to develop discussion and reflection, teamwork, presentation, and leadership skills. You will be able to capitalise on past academic and employment experience, and become exposed to a variety of business sectors and management scenarios.
Although the course is explicitly designed as a pathway to the MSc Business suite of courses, the skills practised are transferrable and will provide a strong grounding in business, management and leadership roles. As one of our graduates you will benefit from the Business and Law Schools’ Alumni Networking Platform, and from our close ties with the regional and national business communities.
To study this course, you must meet the following criteria: A minimum of a third class pass or ordinary degree from a UK university or equivalent. Professional qualifications that are equivalent to an honours degree may also be acceptable; be aged 21 or over.
