Our Early Years and Primary (Blended) PGCE course will allow you to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Primary National Curriculum, to enable you to kick-start your career in teaching.
Graded by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’ – the highest grading possible – this course is primarily delivered online, with the addition of two compulsory training weekends each year. Placements form a large part of the course’s structure and you will complete practical and assessed placements throughout the duration of your course.
You will also have the opportunity to choose an area of specialism should you wish to focus on one key subject.
On completion of the Early Years and Primary (Blended) PGCE course you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status, which allows you to begin working in a school or other educational establishment.

Although a majority of this course is delivered online, you will have ongoing access to staff to enable to them to support you through every step of your degree.
This course also requires you to spend a significant amount of time in our partnership schools, where you will be guided and mentored by an experienced teacher who will act as your school-based mentor.
You will also be assigned a university tutor to support both you and your school-based mentor, to ensure that your school experience fully develops your skills as a teacher.

Teaching And Assessment
This course is primarily delivered online to provide flexibility and the ability for you to study at times convenient to you.
A mix of practical and assessed placements will be undertaken to develop your skills and knowledge. Arranged by Northumbria University
, assessed school placements will run for eight weeks and allow you to enhance your classroom-based practice and ability to plan and deliver lessons. In addition, practical placements will allow you to complete a series of online tasks and further develop your understanding and hands-on experience.
This course is assessed via a range of methods that include written assignments, presentations, reflective personal portfolios and school-based assessed placements. These approaches will enable you to gather the evidence you need to demonstrate your competence against the Teachers’ Standards (2012) and to be awarded the PGCE. On successful completion of both you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.
As a distance learner a large proportion of your course’s content will be delivered online using the latest innovative software.
Learning materials such as module handbooks, assessment information, lecture presentation slides and reading lists will be available via our innovative e-learning platform, Blackboard. You can also access student support and other key University systems through your personal account.
In addition, you will also be provided access to innovative learning and assessment platform, pebble+, where you can store your written material including reflections, assignments, notes and a portfolio of evidence linked to the Teachers’ Standards, together with assignment feedback from your professional tutor.
Research-rich learning is embedded throughout this course. You will be able to draw on our research-led teaching approaches and embark on a process where critical, analytical thinking and self-reflection are central to the development of your knowledge and understanding of learning, teaching and the professional role of a teacher.
