Oil and gas are the world’s major sources of primary energy with high pressure pipelines transporting vast quantities of fuel around the world. This is a highly lucrative industry and will appeal to career focused, practical, problem solvers with a background in engineering.
Northumbria’s market leading distance learning course, developed in partnership with Penspen Ltd, is the only one of its kind in the UK. Students will learn how to apply the theory and practice of pipeline integrity engineering supported by a company with over 60 years’ experience in delivering engineering excellence.
The course is underpinned by practical, work-based scenarios focused towards industry requirements. Using innovative online tutorials, case studies and interactive evaluation tools, you will develop the relevant skills to deal with unique problems in pipeline integrity including assessing damage, risk, and corrosion problems, as well as learning the principles of pipeline engineering.
Pipeline Integrity Management is a corporate-validated award, which can be studied as a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert), a Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) and a Masters (MSc). Each award must be studied in sequence, with all modules shown in the PG Cert and PG Dip completed before the Masters Project may be studied.
Due to the shortage of professional pipeline engineers with specific skills in pipeline integrity, there is a growing demand for graduates in this field. Our graduates go onto a range of exciting careers in the global energy industry.
Please note that you must have successfully completed the PG Cert and PG Dip awards before progressing to the Masters.
The department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering is a top-35 engineering research department with 79% of our outputs ranked world-leading or internationally excellent according to the latest UK wide research assessment exercise for world-leading publications among UK universities in General Engineering.
Who would this Course suit?
Students will be creative and practically minded in their approach to problem solving. This distance learning course will be ideal if you are already in permanent employment in the pipeline industry and wish to extend and deepen your skills; or if you wish to enter this attractive industry where there is a recognised shortage of skilled staff.
Normally successful applicants will hold an honours degree (2:2 or above) in Engineering. Candidates may hold a professional qualification of equivalent standing which had a significant requirement for academic study. Applicants who are not graduates and do not hold professional qualifications of equivalent standing may be considered for entry if they show evidence of a strong motivation and capability for academic study and personal development (e.g. evidence of attendance at short courses) and/or significant depth of work experience and responsibilities for initiating and influencing performance improvement and innovation.
