Course Description

About this course

Project management is an exciting and effective management strategy which presents challenging opportunities to the ambitious construction management professional. The applied skills and competencies of a construction project manager are necessary for the successful completion of complex construction projects, particularly within the ever-changing context of the construction industry.

This course is aimed at those looking for the management skills required to progress towards senior management positions within construction-related organisations, particularly internationally-driven contracting companies. These skills include knowledge and understanding of communication, organisation and innovative construction practice and concepts, both at a strategic level and in international construction project team management.

This course provides the opportunity to study in the UK and France, combining a university experience with a unique work-based programme. The course commences each September and consists of one semester of full-time study at Northumbria University, followed by a 12-month combined work training programme at L’École d'Ingénieurs du CESI in Nanterre, Paris / graduate employment with a relevant construction-related employer in France.

The first semester at Northumbria consists of taught modules in English, while the year-long programme at EI.CESI includes taught modules in French, work experience in a French organisation, and the completion of a professional practice thesis. Your thesis will be supervised by both Northumbria and CESI staff, with close mentoring from the organisation with which you will be working. Students seeking international careers either in the UK, France or across the world with supporting employers gain a distinct advantage from this course. Whilst some of the course is taught in English there is the requirement for students to have a good working knowledge of French.

The assessment of the learning outcomes of individual modules reflects the varying subject-related needs of those modules, and focuses upon the relationship between theory and professional practice. The dual award programme consists of 180 Level 7 (or equivalent) credit points of taught modules and 60 Level 7 credit points from the Professional Practice Thesis module. The taught modules are assessed by a combination of examinations, assignments, reports, time-constrained assignments and presentations.

The Professional Practice Thesis module builds upon the concepts and theories taught at Northumbria during the Applied Research Methods module. The module requires students to further develop, consolidate and apply research skills that are expected from a postgraduate student when investigating a relevant issue. Students are required to undertake a piece of analytical, reflective academic research that results in the production of an original 15,000-word Masters dissertation relevant to the core philosophy of the dual award programme and related to construction professional practice.

This is an ideal international postgraduate course for graduates who want to progress within the project-based construction industry. It is suitable for relatively new graduates with restricted construction-related work experience and also highly experienced construction-related practitioners. The course can enhance existing career opportunities within the construction industry or act as preparation for further postgraduate study, i.e. PhD. Demand for construction project managers who can demonstrate the skills to effectively manage construction projects, particularly international projects, continues to grow both nationally and internationally. Indeed, opportunities for a varied, well-paid, challenging and international career in construction project management are significant.

Admissions procedures normally include an interview for home students. As the Programme is dual award in nature, applicants are required to apply to both institutions. A good level of French (TOEIC (75) or TCF (level 4)) will also be required as lectures will be taught in French.

Entry Requirements

The programme is demanding and is designed to stretch the intellectual, communication and personal capabilities of those who are selected and also to build upon their professional practice experience. Normally, applicants will be required to have at least a 2.2 classification construction-related undergraduate degree or an equivalent professional qualification with professional practice experience in a subject area agreed as appropriate by the Programme Leader. Applicants with other qualifications and relevant professional practice experience will be considered on merit by the Admissions Tutor, but should demonstrate at least 5 years' full-time experience in a relevant industrial context at a professional level.
