Creative Writing in the Classroom PG Cert

Course Description

Creative writing is fundamental to the national curriculum at both primary and secondary levels. It continues to be an essential tool for encouraging pupils’ understanding and perception as well as for developing their written language skills, yet there has been little support or training for the teaching of creative writing.

This is a specialist postgraduate route designed to develop teachers’ creative writing skills and, in doing so, to enhance your competence and confidence in delivering creative writing within the classroom.

The planning of the degree has drawn on the expertise of New Writing North, the North East region’s writing development agency. It has been designed with a task- based approach which means that you must produce a portfolio of your own creative writing as well as a reflective essay.

The course is taught via two semester-long modules, covering prose fiction in semester 1 and poetry in semester 2. Each module is taught over 11 two-hour sessions, plus individual tutorials. In alternate weeks the cohort will develop their writing in conjunction with our MA Creative Writing students, and then explore the relations between writing and pedagogy as a dedicated group. The sessions introduce students to the workshop method so central to the delivery of creative writing in universities, providing them with a supportive environment within which they can develop their own creative writing skills. A range of writing styles and techniques are covered. In addition, however, the course continually draws upon the teachers’ experiences in the classroom encouraging them to think about how the creative writing exercises they have been undertaking as part of the course might be adapted for their own classrooms.

Entry Requirements

Relevant degree with a 2:2 classification and experience working in the teaching professionFor students whose first language is not English evidence of having reached the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 TOEFL (575 paper-based, 90 internet-based), is required before entry.
