Course in depth

Dean completed Birmingham City University’s blended-learning MSc Logistics Programme in 2010. It was the discovery that University had introduced a flexible, mainly distance-learning, Masters course, blended with tutorial support that enabled Dean, as a London-based logistics professional, to take the opportunity to advance his expertise.
With substantial experience in the parcel and mail sector at managerial level, Dean says: “I wanted to underpin years of practical experience by exploring in-depth more academic knowledge and skills. I particularly enjoyed interacting with tutors and other industry professionals.”
In the course of researching for his MSc dissertation for the University’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE), Dean discovered there was also the opportunity to submit a 2,500 word essay to the ‘Logistics Student of the Year’ competition. This was entitled ‘The Carbon Challenge – What measures should the logistics industry be taking to reduce its carbon footprint?’
Dean’s entry proved to be exceptional with practical environmentally-friendly recommendations for the Logistics Industry to develop ‘greener’ operating methods, which would not increase costs, erode profits or diminish efficiency. His valuable proposals won the UK-Government’s Department of Transport Freight Best Practice ‘Logistics Student of the Year’ prize, comprising a trophy and £500 cheque. These were presented to him at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport’s ‘Logistics Research Network’ conference, at Cardiff University.
Having been further rewarded with a student placement on the Freight Best Practice team at the Department for Transport, Dean recommended that his ‘greener logistics’ propositions should entail practitioners at every level of the sector receiving additional vocational training.
His University Course Director, Dennis Foster, says: “Dean’s award is recognition of his understanding of future challenges facing the UK-Logistics sector.
When Richard discovered Birmingham City University had introduced a mainly distance-learning Masters course, blended with campus-based tutorial support, he saw a way of advancing his capabilities through a study course compatible with life with a young family. Sponsored by his company, the MSc programme in Supply Chain Management enabled Richard to develop supply chain management skills relevant to the challenges he regularly faced in managing the logistics for moving valuable, often bulky and complex, machinery and products from Brazil to the UK and European destinations.
Richard says: “I valued highly the opportunity to gain greater, in-depth knowledge of distribution channels, materials management and human resource management skills, as well as learning through sharing experience with fellow students.”
His professional commitment and enthusiasm saw Richard excel in all aspects of his course. The overall high-level of his performance meant Richard was the natural recipient of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (UK) Prize for his graduation year.
His Course Director at the University’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE), Dennis Foster, says: “Richard is one of the first Supply Chain Management MSc students to graduate having had the course delivered by flexible, blended learning. He is the first postgraduate student I can remember to gain distinctions, both for his course work and his major project dissertation. He thoroughly deserves the Institute’s Prize.” As he considers possible overseas career development, Richard intends to pursue further work-based training.
