MA Fine Art

Course Description

Summary

This course is centred on the development of each student's own art practice in relationship to contemporary debates in philosophy, art history, theory and context.

The course is firmly founded upon the consideration of art practice, in whatever form it takes and in whatever circumstances it occurs: drawing, painting, sculpture, print, film/video, photography, installation, performance, participatory and interdisciplinary practice.

Students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of fine art as the course provides an exciting experience which encourages development of a high level of speculation, and honing of critical and analytical skills.

The course is part of the Art Based Master's Programme - an integrated framework that allows students to build their own course. Core modules in any given course become option modules in all other courses. Students will have an opportunity to engage with other students from diverse learning and professional experiences. Various freestanding options are available.

This course is divided into three trimesters to allow students to work towards a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or a Master's qualification.

Modules

Modules include: Advanced Practice 1 and 2; Research in Practice; Final presentation or dissertation.

Shared option modules include: Art in the Public Realm; Arts Policy and Cultural Planning; Discourses in Art and Design; Art and New Media; Models and Methods of Curatorial Practice; Photography as Research.

Assessment

A practice led, seminar and research-based course, with assessment focused on the development of the student's practical art work but also including an extended essay; the final Master’s submission, which is exclusively practice-based, takes the form of an exhibition open to the public.
