Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or one of recognized standing abroad. A grade point average of 3.0 (A = 4.0) is the minimum requirement for admission to the Graduate program. For international students, a minimum score of 600 is required on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (250 on the computer-based test). IELTS scores must be 6.5 and 6 or higher on any/all sub-sections.
Applicants already enrolled in the University of Illinois Department of Journalism undergraduate degree program are eligible for the Department of Journalism 4+1 option leading to the Master of Science in Journalism. Students can apply for this program in the first semester of their junior year and will be encouraged to select their remaining undergraduate journalism elective courses at the 200- and 300-level. As graduate students, they will enroll in a minimum of four advanced journalism electives at the 400 and 500 levels, in addition to required graduate courses.
The Department of Journalism also offers a specialized journalism track to a limited number of applicants who already possess or are working on advanced degrees in selected fields such as, but not limited to, the sciences, technology, engineering, health and medical fields, and mathematics. Limited fellowships of tuition and fee waiver would be available for applicants in the specialized journalism sequence.
Either sequence would be open to mid-career journalists wishing to do advanced work in multimedia, investigative, narrative or immersion journalism.
The department does not offer a Ph.D. degree. For the program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy in Communications, visit the Institute of Communications Research in the College of Media.
The application deadline is January 15 for fall 2016.
