Few enterprises are more important than passing along our cultural traditions to the generations of tomorrow.As the state’s flagship university for teacher training, the University of Illinois School of Music has been at the forefront of music education for fully a century since establishing Public School Methods here in 1902–03. We have trained countless teachers who have gone on to careers that ensure the future of music education across the country.Graduate degrees offered include a Master of Music Education (including a 3 summers-only option), a Doctor of Philosophy, and a Doctor of Education. Specialty areas center around choral music, K-12 general music, and instrumental music.
More than 300 university educators and administrators across the country have earned their doctorates from our institution. Students choose this school for its rich curriculum that takes advantage of the School of Music’s strengths in conductor training and band, orchestra, and vocal music. Our faculty members are valued resources and models for students as they share their insights and knowledge of the literature based on years of teaching and research. We house The Council for Research in Music Education (CRME), and we continue to sponsor outstanding conferences and activities in early music learning. Teachers can earn advanced degrees in our unique summers-only program. We expose the student to the science as well as the art of fine teaching through a comprehensive, musical, and pragmatic training program, along with individual, up-to-the-minute advice and critiques.
